Experiment
To investigate frictional behavior of flat clutch plate using clutch plate friction
apparatus.

Objective
The aim of the experiment is to observe the friction of flat clutch plates by using
Clutch plate friction apparatus. For this purpose , we use Wooden and Nylon plates.
Uniform wear and uniform pressure formula shall be used to find out frictional
coefficients and then values will be compared.

Apparatus

1.Clatch plate friction apparatus 2.Weight hangers

3.Nylon and wooden plates. 4.Different weights
5.Weight balance

Procedure
• Take wooden plate clutch and place it on the top of fixed plate. Inner radius of
wooden plate clutch is R2 =7.5 cm and outer radius R1=12.5 cm.
• Now place movable plate ( known as axial load) upon the wooden plate clutch.
Diameter of movable plate is 29cm and it’s weight W1 is 32.5 N.
• Twist the cords in clockwise manner around the movable plate and then pass them
over pulley in downward direction.
• Attach mass hangers at two side of the threads and add weights on both sides.
• Add weights on both sides until the movable plate rotates at constant speed. Note
the force at which plate start rotating. This force is known as tangential load W1.
• Now put some mass over the movable plate and find out tangential load to rotate
the top plate at constant speed.
• Keep addition of masses up to a maximum value of mass.
• In each case, find out the tangential load which is required to rotate the top plate at
the constant speed.
• Now using uniform pressure formula to find coefficient of friction.

• Then use the formula of uniform wear to find friction coefficient.

• Repeat the same process for Nylon plate .

Calculations for Wood plate

Tangential load T= W2 × D (Nm) Axial load W1 µp µw
W1
1.504 N 0.435 32.5 N 0.131 0.134
1.904 N 0.523 37.5 N 0.136 0.139
2.004 N 0.501 42.5 N 0.145 0.136

Calculations for Nylon plate

Tangential load T=W2 × D (Nm) Axial load W1 µp µw
W1
2.104 N 0.610 32.5 0.183 0.187
2.304 N 0.668 37.5 0.174 0.178
2.504 N 0.729 42.5 0.169 0.172

Conclusion:
We noted values of tangential loads from clutch plate friction apparatus . By using
these values, we find out torque produced by movable plate. By putting values in uniform
pressure and uniform wear formulas, we find values for frictional coefficients. We
compared these values and note that values of frictional coefficient for rough and wear
surfaces are higher than smooth and uniform surfaces.
