MOMENTUM AND MARBLES

I. Objectives
At the end of the activity you should be able to :
1. identify the factors that affects momentum

II. Materials:
2 balls (1 small & 1 large)
A ruler with groove in the middle
A couple of thick hard books
Index card
Masking tape

III. Procedures:
1. First, measure the height of one book; record it on the table provided below.
2. Set up the ruler on top of one book
3. Fold the index card in half and put it few centimeters away from the set up.
4. Rule the small ball along groove of the ruler towards the index card.
5. Measure the stopping distance of the small marble.
6. Repeat the process using the larger ball this time.
7. This time, set up the ruler on top of two books then repeat the process from 1 to 6.

IV. Guide Questions:

1. How will you compare the stopping distance of the small and large marble?

2. What do you think happen to the velocity of the marbles as their point of release increases?

3. If momentum is a measure of how difficult it is to stop moving object, which of the two marbles is
hard to stop?

4. Based on the activity, what do you think are the factors that affects momentum of a moving object?
