Our high school is
"New higher vocational training course arrives at Ies Galileo". famous for its
vocational training
degrees that allow us
to train students and prepare them, with the
certainty that they will have a job opportunity.
Therefore, to the degrees that our school already
offers, we have added a new one called "Clinical
Electromedicine". This degree is only offered in our
school within the whole community of Castilla y
León and will allow us to train students to be able
to use electrical devices that are used in hospitals
such as electro scalpels, de brillators, mechanical
ventilators... etc. Despite being a relatively new
cycle, it already has 20 students. This one-year
degree covers all the knowledge for the use of

CO-OFFICIAL LANGUAGES IN SPAIN

When talking about European languages, Spanish, French, Italian, or German are usually
the first ones to come to our minds. Nevertheless, a wide variety of overlooked co-official
languages coexist together with those of greater importance in many of Europe’s countries, but,
what exactly are co-official languages?
Co-official languages can be defined as those spoken in specific geographical areas within
a nation, apart from its official or most widespread language. Furthermore, they are legally
recognised and generally spoken by the big majority of the population of that territory.
Taking this into consideration, we can notice how rich and diverse Spain is, linguistically
speaking. Luckily for them, Spaniards do not need to look at foreign countries in order to find
languages other than Castilian, as Spain already presents another four legally accepted co-official
languages: Catalan, Valencian, Galician, and Basque. Nonetheless, their acceptance throughout
history and nowadays’ society is the matter of another article.
Catalan is used throughout the regions of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Andorra,
Sardinia (Italy), and some bordering areas between Spain and France. As for Valencian, its use is
nowadays limited to the Autonomous Community of Valencia. Most of the Galician speakers are
found in the region of Galicia, while a small minority can also be found in some rural areas of León
and Asturias.
Finally, Basque is limited to a region called Euskal Herria, which includes the Basque
Country, Navarre, and a small part of southern France.
While these might not be as widely spoken as Spanish, according to the Pew Research
Centre they constitute the first language of
19% of the Spanish population. Meanwhile,
a total of almost 13 million inhabitants are
able to speak at least one of them. Figures
show that around 8.8 million people speak
Catalan or Valencian in Spain, even though
the numbers increase up to 9 million,
adding those Catalan speakers of certain
French and Italian zones. On the other
hand, Galician speakers sum up to about
3.2 million speakers, while merely 750,000
people speak Basque.
These languages are mainly used daily in those areas where they are spoken, and are
generally studied and used in institutions and businesses. However, they are currently not
widespread throughout the rest of Spain, where they are primarily unspoken by the general public.
According to recent surveys carried out by the INE (National Statistics Institute) in 2021,
both Galician and Valencian have suffered a loss of more than 10% of their speakers, while
Catalan’s numbers have remained alike, and only Basque has experienced a 10% increase.
For this reason, many initiatives have been carried out by both the Spanish Government
and regional organisations in pursuit of spreading and avoiding the disappearance of the Iberian
languages. Some of these include an increase in their teaching, the creation of online resources
for their learning, or the newly developed, and highly controversial law that permits its utilisation in
the Spanish Parliament.
In conclusion, despite co-official languages being limited to a very small community of
speakers, it is crucial to maintain those
languages alive, as they form part of the
cultural and linguistic heritage given to us.
Although their future is uncertain, it is our
duty to do everything in our hands to
correctly preserve these languages. As
Rita Mae Brown once said: "Language is
the road map of a culture. It tells you where
its people come from and where they are
going.”

The current Selectivity will be maintained for one more year and the change in format
is delayed to 2025.
The Government has nally decided to postpone the entry into force of the new
Selectivity until 2025. The change was initially planned for next June in order to adapt the
University Access Assessment (EVAU) to the new competency-based curriculum that has
been implemented with the new educational law, the Lomloe. The Ministry of Education
had requested legal reports to nd out if a government in of ce could approve a decree of
such characteristics and the response has been that it cannot do so. Students who are
about to start the second year of Bachillerato will, therefore, take a test similar to the last

HOW WIDESPREAD EUROPEAN LANGUAGES ARE IN SPAIN
Thankfully, most Spaniards do speak Spanish, as it is the first or second language of over
99% of the population, although it is not the only language spoken in this Iberian country. Taking
co-official languages aside, other European languages have always had their place as the second
or third language of many people in Spain, historically.
That is because of the proximity of Spain to other European countries, geographically and
linguistically speaking. Sharing linguistic roots and a history of great interaction among the
countries has made romance languages such as French, Italian, or Portuguese commonly learned
in Spanish schools as well.
On the other hand, as a result of the expansion of English-speaking countries and an
increase in the use of English globally, it has risen to be the main foreign language taught in
Spain, becoming a compulsory subject in numerous schools.
Unfortunately, recent polls carried out by the CIS (Sociological Research Centre) show that
only 51% of Spanish adults speak a foreign language. English takes the
lead as the most spread foreign language throughout the nation, as
around 27% of the population know it to some extent: 50% in the case
of people between the ages of 18-24, and only 17% among older
adults. It is followed by French, a language only spoken by 17% of
Spanish adults and 13% of its youngsters. Finally, other languages
such as German, Italian, or Portuguese barely make up 10% of
the speakers of the total population. Although not even half of Spain’s
inhabitants can speak a foreign language, the numbers are even lower
when it comes to using those languages fluently. Roughly 25-30% of
those people claim to be able to utilise them with ease during informal and daily situations.
Moreover, a considerable amount of adults have stated to have forgotten the majority of their
pieces of knowledge about foreign languages over time, due to a lack of practice and the
unavailability of giving them a use within the nation.
After all the stated above, we can conclude
that the presence of European languages in Spain is very
little widespread in contrast to other countries, which
contradicts the forecasts. Although the accessibility of
resources for learning languages has increased recently, it
is up to us, the people, to make an effort to celebrate not
only our own language, but our differences and bonds with
European ones.

Junior Esports
In our high school we have an extraordinary squad of teachers who want the best for the
students, so they have created an esports team to ensure
that the students can have fun and learn how to compete
while studying and learning new things. This esports team
has recently joined junior esports league which is an
esports competition which includes high schools across
Spain that fight for the victory in a variety of video games
such as rocket league.
Junior esports is a competition whose main goal is to
incorporate video games in the educational system to
ensure that the students can learn different values such as teamwork, respect and much more.
This competition is sponsored by some of the big companies of nowadays such as Omen and
Intel.
This competition is divided into tournaments every
weekend in which the different high schools teams
compete against each other to win points to qualify for the
final playoffs where they can achieve a spot in the grand
finals, which have a big economic award for the high
school whose team become the winner of this competition.
To conclude this competition is an excellent idea to
foment studying and learning with video games and to
spread some of the values such as teamwork or respect for each other, also our team will be
competing this year so wish them good luck during this competition.
