PEAK CAN Dongle USB Installation

Windows XP Pro / Windows 7 Pro
PEAK software versions 2011.1 & 2011.2
 Step 1
Removing previous versions

Navigate to the “control panel” location of your laptop. Double click on the Add/Remove
Programs icon.

Once the program list populates scroll down and find any previously installed version
PEAK Can software. Select these and click remove. Repeat for all installed versions.

After removing these programs return to your desktop.

Installing new PEAK software
PCAN Driver 2011.1 exe

Navigate to where you have the PEAK software files stored.

There are 2 PEAK PCAN Driver files that must be installed in the correct order.
Double click on the file “PcanDrive_2011.1exe” first.

In the next dialog box select ‘I agree to……’ and then click “Next”.

In the next dialog box click “Finish”.

The install program will now close.

Restart your laptop

After the PEAK software has finished installing you must restart
your laptop. When the laptop turns off completely (screen goes
black) but before it begins to reboot you must plug the PEAK
CAN USB dongle into a USB port. Doing so allows the Windows
software “Hardware Install Wizard” to find the PEAK dongle.
When prompted enter your user name and password.
Note: The USB port used for the installation must always be
used when connecting the dongle to the laptop otherwise the
dongle may not be recognized by the software.

Hardware Wizard Opens

After a few moments the “Hardware Install Wizard” program

will open automatically. Allow the Hardware Wizard to install
the PEAK dongle. Select “No, not at this time”. Click on
“Next”.

Select “Install the software automatically (Recommended).

Click on “Next”

The software & hardware will now self install.

When the Hardware Wizard is finished installing the PEAK

dongle, click on “Finish”. The dialog window will close.

Open the Control Panel

From your desktop click on “Start”. When the

dialog window opens click on “Control Panel”.

Open the PCAN2 Icon

When the control panel opens (it should be set for ‘Classic
View’) locate the PCAN2 icon. Double click the icon to open.

Setting the Hardware Properties

In the ‘Properties’ dialog box that

opens click on the “Drivers” tab.
Ensure the software drivers shown left
are installed.

Note: Should the listed drivers not be

displayed un-install the software and
hardware using the “Add/Remove
software” function in Control Panel
and the Un-install function for the
hardware in “Device Manager”.
After un-installing the software and
hardware reinstall both from step 1.

Setting the Hardware Properties

In the ‘Properties’ dialog box

click on the “CAN Hardware” tab.
From the drop down menu select
“USB”. After selecting USB the
device should be shown in the
lower discription panel. Click on
“Apply”. Then Click on “OK”.
Close all windows and return to
your desktop.
The USB dongle is now
completely installed and ready
for use. On the dongle body a
red LED indicator will be
illuminated.
