Twilight Analysis notes

Lighting and Colour Dramatic Effect


Dull colours – greys, smoky blues and blacks Creates a dark/grim, gothic atmosphere
Creates mystery as it isn’t always easy to see the surroundings
Makes audience feel tense/afraid
Faint beams of light coming through windows Helps to highlight the characters’ faces
Light makes us think of ‘goodness’
Contrasts with fire
Light shining on faces of James and Bella Shows dramatic facial expressions better

Bright oranges and reds of fire contrast with Highlights James’ death – fire symbolises ‘hell’
darkness

Positioning of Objects within Frame Dramatic Effect

Makes Bella seem defenceless compared with James who seems powerful and in
Low angle over Bella with her broken leg control

Over the shoulder shot when Bella videoed We get to see both characters as well as what James is seeing through the camera

Shows anguish on the faces of Edward and Bella and the aggression of James

We see her facial expression but also, her body convulsing as the poison goes

Looks sore. Highlights that she has been bitten and may either die or turn into a

Body Language
All the vampires have pale faces
Reinforces that the characters are not human and therefore could be dangerous

Normal clothes
Disguises vampires as humans and therefore more difficult to detect

Prosthetic make-up for Bella’s bite Makes the wound look painful and gory – possibly causing the audience to wince

Adds to the gore and makes audience feel disgusted/repulsed


Prosthetics used for Edward biting James’s neck

Again, shows them as beast-like creatures, suggesting they are angry and dangerous
Lots of growling between J&E

Bella grunting and convulsing Gives the impression she is in pain/possibly dying or turning into a vampire

James smiles sinisterly throughout


Makes him appear menacing/like he is enjoying Bella’s pain

Sound Dramatic Effect


Growling Again – shows anger and that they are not human

Glass breaking Destructive – shows the power/force with which they are fighting

Mum’s voice on VCR Tricks Bella to believing James has her mother

Peaceful but sorrowful music in flashback Marks a change in the scene – suggests she is now peaceful/possibly dying

Leg and head cracking


Sounds painful – possibly making the audience wince/feel sickened
