GRADE FOUR (4) WORKSHEET: TERM 2
SUBJECT: LITERACY
WEEK 1: LESSON 1
Name: _______________________________ Date: __________________________

READING: SYLLABICATION
Syllabication means dividing of words into syllables.
A syllable is a single speech sound made up of one vowel sound.

Here are two rules of syllabication:

1. Split words between two consonants that come between two

vowels.

2. Check for words where there are more than two consonants.
Divide the syllables keeping the blends together.

PRACTICE EXAMPLES:
Say the words below. Use (/) to separate each word in syllables.

Monster = mon/ster sandwich = sand/wich

Instance = in/stance dentist = den/tist

Apple = ap/ple contract = con/tract

A. ON YOUR OWN

Re-read the syllabication rules above. Below are some words. Read
each word, then write the syllables in the boxes provided. The first
one is done for you.
1
basket honest

bas ket

Sunny nowhere

windy children

Read these words

1. talk 2. play 3. wished 4. Samantha

5. Satty 6. Saski 7. said 8. remembered

Read the text below

Samantha and her friends of Grade Four were talking one day. They
remembered when Ms. Satty, their class teacher, took them on a
field trip for Tourism month two years ago in the month of November.
They visited an Amerindian community where they met a Touchau.
Their teacher told them that the Touchau is the leader of the
Amerindian community. On the trip, the children were placed in
pairs as they were guided by their teacher and the Touchau. It was
a very sunny day and the temperature was rising. “It is very hot,”
Saski said as she took out her fan. John reminded them that soon
after Saski took out her fan, it became windy and then cloudy. The
blue sky was nowhere to be seen. At that point, Ms. Satty told the
children to go under a benab. There the children asked her about

2
the qualities of a leader. They remembered her telling them that a
leader should be honest, caring, humble and polite. Samantha, who
was playing with her phone and talking at that point, was told by Ms.
Satty to write in her book, “I will not play with my phone again. I will
not talk when someone is talking.” The children laughed as
Samantha told them how she felt so ashamed of herself. They all
agreed that it was a great trip and wished that they can be taken
on another such trip. They told each other bye and left for home.

GRAMMAR: PARTS OF SPEECH-Verbs (tenses)

FACTS/TIPS:
The tense of a verb tells when the action of a verb takes place.
Present Tense Past Tense Future Tense
-tells what is -tells what happened -tells what will
happening already. happen tomorrow,
now/regularly. Many verbs form next month or any
past tense by adding time to come.
ed. (Will) is added to the
jumped, cooked, main verb.
walked, played

PRACTICE EXAMPLES
Let us read the sentences below.
Present tense: I play with my dog, Rick, every week.
Past tense: Last week Saturday, I played with my dog Rick.
Future tense: Tomorrow I will play with my dog Rick.

3
ON YOUR OWN:
Complete each sentence with a suitable verb.
1. He always _________________ back home when he smells food.
(trotted, trots)
2. After his bath, I ____________________ his hair. (combed, comb)
3. Saha _____________________ beans tomorrow. (plants, will plant)
4. Last week he ________________ away from me before I could catch
him. (will dash, dashed)
5. Rick usually _______________ his bath. (likes, liked)

VOCABULARY: ABC ORDER- 3rd LETTER

FACTS/TIPS:
Alphabetical or ABC order is putting names, terms or words in the
same order as the letters of the alphabet (A-Z).

Compare the first and second letters of the words. If they are the
same, we look at the third letter of each word. If they are different,
we arrange the words in order of the letters of the alphabet.

PRACTICE EXAMPLES

Arrange the words in each group in alphabetical order

Words Words arranged in alphabetical order

Samantha, Satty, said, Samantha, Saski, Satty

Saski, said
