2. Check for words where there are more than two consonants.
Divide the syllables keeping the blends together.
PRACTICE EXAMPLES:
Say the words below. Use (/) to separate each word in syllables.
A. ON YOUR OWN

Samantha and her friends of Grade Four were talking one day. They
remembered when Ms. Satty, their class teacher, took them on a
field trip for Tourism month two years ago in the month of November.
They visited an Amerindian community where they met a Touchau.
Their teacher told them that the Touchau is the leader of the
Amerindian community. On the trip, the children were placed in
pairs as they were guided by their teacher and the Touchau. It was
a very sunny day and the temperature was rising. “It is very hot,”
Saski said as she took out her fan. John reminded them that soon
after Saski took out her fan, it became windy and then cloudy. The
blue sky was nowhere to be seen. At that point, Ms. Satty told the
children to go under a benab. There the children asked her about
2
the qualities of a leader. They remembered her telling them that a
leader should be honest, caring, humble and polite. Samantha, who
was playing with her phone and talking at that point, was told by Ms.
Satty to write in her book, “I will not play with my phone again. I will
not talk when someone is talking.” The children laughed as
Samantha told them how she felt so ashamed of herself. They all
agreed that it was a great trip and wished that they can be taken
on another such trip. They told each other bye and left for home.
PRACTICE EXAMPLES
Let us read the sentences below.
Present tense: I play with my dog, Rick, every week.
Past tense: Last week Saturday, I played with my dog Rick.
Future tense: Tomorrow I will play with my dog Rick.

4. Last week he ________________ away from me before I could catch
him. (will dash, dashed)

Samuel talked his older brother Samson into going with him to the
water world. Samson was eager to go. They went by boat. It was a
long drive. When they got there, they met Samantha and Samir. The
children noticed all the fishes swimming in the giant aquarium. There
was a mixture of ocean life and freshwater creatures. This wasn‟t a
problem for the creatures. Samuel noticed two men dressed in white
cleaning the front of the aquarium. They both looked at them, when
suddenly catfishes and dolphins came to the surface of the water
and made a lot of noise. Dolphins are highly intelligent mammals.
The children discussed the importance of water. They even spoke of
how plants are affected when there is a drought. With a low tone,
Samuel asked, „What is drought?‟ One of the girls told him that
drought is a lack of rainfall for a long period of time. Drought causes
plants to die. Samantha went on further to say that it is a creeping
disaster. The children looked puzzled.
