The novella was written by an american novelist, screenwriter and actor-Truman

Garcia Capote. He was born September 30th 1924 and lived until August 25th 1984. The
book itself was published in 1958, in which a contemporary writer recalls his early days in
New York City, when he makes the acquaintance of his remarkable neighbour, Holly
Golightly. This is one of his most successful works and has been adapted into a well-
known movie, multiple plays and a musical.

The story is set in New York, the upper east side to be specific, during world war 2. As
far as places go, most of the story happens in the brownstone apartment building, where
Holly and the narrator live.

I'd like to start by saying that Holly is one of my favourite female characters that I've
ever read, which is surprising because she was written by a man and in my experience
men usually write women characters shallow and basic. She also felt very modern to me-
She is witty, very beautiful, blunt but charming and is not against using her looks to get
what she wants. always with dark sunglasses, in the book described with blond hair.
Actually, Holly's real name is Lula Mae Barnes, she was born in Texas and became a child
bride to Doc Golightly because she and her brother were orphaned at a young age. Later
she runs away to Los Angeles and then moves to New York. In the book she is still figuring
out where she feels at home and so she doesn't even bother to name the cat she took in.
On of my favorite quotes from the book explains why-. Holly is an American version of a
geisha - that’s how she earns her living, for example, she gets 100$ for visiting Sally
Tomato in prison every Thursday. While at the start of the book she might seem like just
a party girl, as we get to know her better throughout the book she shows her more
caring-human side.

There is not much known about our narrator. We know that he lived above Holly. He
is a writer . And loves miss Golightly. We never find out his name or how he looks like
(Holly referred to him as Fred, because he looked like her brother by the same name or
darling or buster) and he expresses little to no emotions which makes it really hard to
give him any characteristics. We only see him express anger and sadness after arguments
with holly. He mainly serves as a story teller- he paints the picture of Holly Golightly to us.

1. Transience-By definition this word means to stay somewhere for a short period
of time. It’s a big theme through out the book for Holly. Because by the time she
was 18 she had already moved 3 times never really settling in.
2. Fem ind. Because Golightly was a young woman who lived by herself and was
able to earn her own living.
3. Both platonic and romantic love is mentioned a lot throughout the novel.
Holly's love for her brother and how she goes in to a manic state when she learns that
he died in war represents the platonic side . On the romantic side are all of Holly's
partners like Hose and others who are briefly mentoned. Also sexuality is mentioned a
lot. We know for a fact that holly is not straight- I interpreted that she is a bisexual and
its speculated that the narrator is gay just like the author because he never tries to
make a move on Holly to start up a romantic relationship even though he says he loves
her.

The bird cage symbolizes everything she doesn’t want in life. She doesn't want to be
trapped in a cage like a bird. That’s why she hates the zoo. She doesn’t want to be bound
to a place. That’s why when she gifts the narrator a Bird cage she makes him promise to
never put a living thing in it.
The cat symbolizes Holly's attachment issues. In the novel she mentions that she
and cat don’t belong to each other, they are both independent. Hence the reason she
doesn't give him a name. At the end when she's on her way to Brazil she forces the cat to
run away and immediately after realizes how deep of a connection they really had and
bursts into tears.

The jewelry store Tiffany & co is very important to Holly. When she gets the mean
reds as she says, she gets in a taxi and goes to Tiffany's. It calms her down instantly.
Which brings me to the quote.

This was the quote that stayed with me after finishing the book. I think that every
body has a place that makes them feel the same way Tiffany's made Holly. Where all the
stress and worry disappear. And you don't want to leave.

New vocab

And its ok if for you this process takes longer than others. For example by the end of
the novel Holly still doesn’t know where she belongs, but that doesn't hold her back. It's
what keeps her going. The second moral is that everybody needs a friend. Even Holly,
who swore herself of independency made a few friends. While most of them were just to
benefit her, there were some, like the narrator and even the cat, she didn't expect to
befriend and grow attached to. Sometimes these accidental friendships are the best you
can have.

In conclusion, I'd like to say that I really enjoyed the book. The novel was already on
my reading list so I was very happy that I was able to read it for the presentation. It was a
fun, short read and I would give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The only negative comment is that
the writer rushed over some topics and events that, in my opinion, could have been
explored more like her life in Texas and Los Angeles, and I wouldn't mind a continuation
for the book, I'd love to know what Holly was up to after leaving New York. I would
recommend this book to anyone specially to those who are struggling to find their place
in the world, because it made me feel better about the fact that I don't have a clear
direction on where I'm going.
