hi teacher, im going to introduce the "third conditional" and the forms to use it.

[….]

The third conditional is a type of conditional sentence in English that is used to talk about unreal or

hypothetical situations in the past.

[…]

The third conditional has several structures, from affirmative, negative and interrogative, below I
will explain each of them.

[….]

The affirmative structure of the third conditional is used to express hypothetical or unreal
situations in the past. It follows this pattern:

"If + past perfect (had + past participle), would have + past participle."

For example:

If she had known it was your birthday, she would have bought you a gift.

In this example you can see how she did not know that the other person had a birthday so she did
not buy him a gift, but if she had known she would have bought it.

And

If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.

in this example it was not sufficiently studied and therefore received a lower grade.

[….]

The negative form of the third conditional is created by adding "not" after "would have" in the if-
clause.

The structure typically follows this pattern:

If + past perfect (had + not + past participle), would not have + past participle.

For example:

If I had not missed the bus, I would not have been late for work.

in this example we did not catch the bus, so we were late for work.

And

If they had not forgotten to set the alarm, they would not have overslept.

in this example we see how they forgot set the alarm and slept through it.

[….]
And finally

The interrogative structure of the third conditional is used to ask questions about hypothetical or
unreal past situations. It follows this pattern:

Would + subject + have + past participle if + past perfect (had + past participle)?

For example:

Would she have passed the exam if she had studied more?

She is asking herself why she failed the exam, hypothesizing that she should have studied more.

And

Would they have caught the last train if they had arrived on time?

they were not on time so they missed the train, if only they had arrived earlier maybe they could
have taken it.

[….]

I hope my explanation has been clear, and that I have given a good understanding of everything, I
appreciate your time watching this, I hope it has been to your liking.
