FACTS Language
Until the 1800s, French was a language that was more widely
spoken in Holland and Germany than it was in some parts of
France.
2 Euskera, language isolate, the only remnant of the languages spoken Euskera
in southwestern Europe before the region was Romanized in the 2nd
through 1st century BCE.
4 The Dutch words made it into English often via the Dutch colons Dutch
settling in the American colonies in the 17th century. Examples of
Dutch loanwords include apartheid, bamboo, bazooka, blink, bluff,
brandy, coleslaw, cookie, cruise, drill, gherkin, gin, iceberg, Santa
Claus and waffel.
9 Nearly 200 million people around the world speak German. German
While this is not as high as languages like Spanish, English, or
Chinese, it’s still one of the most popular languages.
