What is ‘Research’ and ‘Publication’?

▪ Research: A systematic approach where scientific methods are used to

solve/analyze/investigate a problem that advances the scientific knowledge and
promotes human welfare.

▪ Publication: Taking the research findings to the people through systematic and
established modes (such as journal) after rigorous scrutiny and validation of the
claims.
Why ‘Research & Publication’?

▪ Advancing the science

▪ Contributing to human welfare

▪ Personal benefits:

➢ Its your property, no one can take it from you

➢ Recognition

➢ Benefits in admission to universities for higher study

➢ Developing the profile for building the career in academic and research line
What is ‘Journal’ and ‘Conference’ paper?

▪ Journal paper: Any article submitted directly to the editorial system for the review
process, and after the review process, it is accepted and published.

▪ Conference paper: Any article submitted to a conference, and then presented at that
conference

▪ Conference proceeding: Selected articles from conference is forwarded to the digital

archiving using DOI* number.

*DOI: Digital Object Identifier

Types of article

▪ Original research

▪ Review article

▪ Case study

▪ Survey paper

▪ Application

▪ Technical note

▪ Special issue
What is open access journal?

▪ An article when published after the due review process, then the authors are offered
to publish the article without any copy right restriction at the expense of
approximately $3000. Now, this option is available for almost all journal published
by reputed publishers. Usually, the funded projects have such option.

▪ However, lets not confuse ‘Open access’ with ‘Paid’ journal.

▪ Paid journal: You submit your work, and pay the amount they ask for, your article is
published. The quality of the article may not be as high as the article of reputed
journals.
How much time is required for an article to be accepted?

▪ It is subjective to journals.

▪ Usually 1 month to 6 months, in some case, it can go up to 1.5 - 2 years.

In how many stages an article may get rejected?

▪ Rejection 1: Once submitted, after the preliminary screening by the editor.

▪ Rejection 2: Once the review is completed, based on the comments of the reviewer,
the article may be rejected.

▪ Rejection 3: After review, the reviewers recommended for revision, and the editor has
revision to be reconsidered, and you have addressed the revision. In this stage, the
article may get rejected.
Ethics in publication

▪ Unless otherwise mentioned, the content submitted in the article is assumed as the
contribution of the authors.

▪ In presenting the article, the content must not duplicate with the already published
sources. If duplicates, then it is called ‘Plagiarism’ which is considered as a serious
offense in intellectual world.

▪ In referencing the works of other authors, the contents need to be rephrased by the
authors. If you want to keep as it is, then you have to use “ ” or ‘ ’.
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Title and authors

▪ Your title must present your work right mostly

▪ Use the appropriate words, if needed consult with experts in that field
▪ Try to avoid unnecessary and vague words in title
▪ For the title, shorter is better
▪ Any person who actively contributed to an article will be author
▪ Order of authors matter in great deal, so consult among authors for the possible order
▪ Usually, the person with highest contribution in intellectual level be the first author, then
then so on
▪ Usually, the supervisor name is put at the end unless s/he has contribution otherwise
▪ Carefully put the affiliation of each author, after acceptance of article it is very hard to
change the affiliation

Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Abstract

▪ Problem statement: What have you done in this paper?

▪ Methodology: How did you do the work?

▪ Main findings: What are the key outcomes?

▪ Principle conclusion: What are you claiming?

Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Abstract
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Keywords

▪ Mention 4-6 keywords which clearly presents your work.

▪ These words help the search engine to offer the appropriate readers your article
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Introduction

▪ Present a general story about the necessity of your work, significance of the work,
and then how your work is fulfilling the gaps of the present knowledge

▪ 1. Talk about a general territory

▪ 2. Indicate what shortage is available in there

▪ 3. Mention how you are filling that gap

▪ 4. Clearly state the objectives

Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Literature Review

▪ Your work is depending on the other works

▪ To be exact, on what gaps, your work in positioned

▪ Literature review is the heart of the research

▪ Its important that you read a lot of research papers

▪ In this section, mention concisely what others have worked on (don’t forget to
rephrase!)

▪ With each article, indicate what is the shortcoming of that article

▪ Lastly, in general, mention the gaps of the existing literature

▪ And, finally, the objectives of the present work are unambiguously stated
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Novelty/Scope of work

▪ At the second last paragraph of Introduction, mention the gaps of the literature
study.
▪ At the last paragraph of Introduction, mention the objectives of the current article.
▪ However, it is possible that the gaps and objectives are presented in a separate
section.
Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Experimental conditions

▪ Put the information related to experiments concisely.

▪ For instance, the material, cutting tool, coolant, specific setup etc.

▪ For all these, mention the specification of the machines, equipments and devices.

▪ Also, highlight the value(s) of the used parameters.

▪ Stress if any new method is used in your article.

Industrial
Writing a good quality article: Modeling Methods

▪ Mention why you are developing this model

▪ Your model is of what, and in terms of what

▪ If required, provide a short description of the fundamentals of the used model

Industrial
Writing a good quality article: Boundary conditions

▪ Clearly and elaborately mention the boundary conditions of the developed models

▪ It is important that all the conditions/limitations are mentioned with as closeness as

possible

▪ Moreover, list the assumptions that you have granted, with possible reasons
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Results and Discussion

▪ The success of a paper depends largely on this part

▪ It can be presented as a whole under the title ‘Results and discussion’, or under
different subsections of ‘Results and discussion’
▪ Either way, initially, describe the summary of what you are going to talk about in this
section
▪ Then, in order, present the results and then discuss the results to the maximum
extent
▪ While doing so, compare your findings with the results of literature. Clearly state if it
matches with other works or goes against it.
▪ Make a point of agreement/disagreement, and then show how your work is more
valuable than others work

Writing a good quality article: Results and Discussion

▪ Task: Interpret the following figure as detail as possible:

Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Conclusion

▪ At the first part, mentions what you have done

in this research work.

▪ Then, present clearly and without any twisting,

what have you got.

▪ In some cases, mention why this happened.

▪ Also, succinctly state the industrial/real life

implication of your work
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Future Scope of work

▪ Show the audiences some avenues for

future works

▪ This can be an extension of your work or

similar study in another nearby field or
modification of your works or the your
that can remove the limitation of your
work
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Acknowledgment

▪ It is very important that you acknowledge the help rendered by other researcher,
institute, fund provider, government, authority, etc.

▪ This can save you from legal adverse issues

▪ Also, showing such admittance of help or fund make the editor/reviewer feel that
the work is genuine and has broader implication in society
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: References

▪ Cite appropriate and relevant

journal/conference/book/report etc. in
Introduction, and other parts.

▪ Especially, in ‘Introduction’ and ‘Results and

discussion’.

▪ Different journals have different format of

reference.

▪ Its better to use reference management

software such as Endnote, Mendeley etc.
Industrial & Manufacturing
Writing a good quality article: Appendix

▪ Any Tables, Figure, Program, Formulas

etc. that you don’t want to put inside the
manuscript, nonetheless deem valuable
and necessary, can be put as appendix at
the end of the manuscript.
