Lucha Libre: the Mexican wrestling world

Lucha libre combines athleticism, theater, and


traditions.
Reflects Mexican culture with it’s roots in the
early 20th century.
It embodies the struggle between good and evil,
told through high-level acrobatics and theatrical
narratives.
It is an expression of the Mexican spirit and
identity.
Beginnings of El Santo

Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, born on September 23, 1917, in


Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico.
Raised in a working-class family

He starred in series of movies known as
"luchador films" or "Santo films" which
even more implicated his fame.
Later there also animated films were made
featuring el santo as a superhero, like „El
Santo contra Los Clones”

End of Career – The Unmasking Event
In 1982 El Santo announced his retirement, as the
end of his career organized a farewell tour in which
he fought with many famous luchadors, his career,
naturally, ended with a win.

In January 1984, El Santo was a guest on the


Mexican TV show "Contrapunto" and without
warning took his mask off.

On February 5, 1984, El Santo died in the hospital


from a heart attack. He was buried in his silver mask.
And his funeral was attended by more than 10,000
people.
The Legacy

Santo has become a cultural symbol.


His cinematic adventures have influenced pop culture.
Museums, monuments and posters remind us of his
character.
The values he spread and his inspiring heroism have made
a big impact in the lives of many people.
