Personal statement
The famous mathematical author M.Klein goes:“Mathematics is a
rational spirit that enables human cogitation to be developed to its
most perfect degree.” This means that math is calculation as well as
essential element combinations，just like to synthesize footballene,
the reaction itself is explained by chemistry; however, the process
only functions thanks to the model behind, which is the
consequence of rational mathematical consideration and analysis.
To be proficient in mathematical knowledge, I started to enjoy
exploring the never-ending hike towards the beauty of a spectacular
view: the prospect of future mathematical challenges and
achievements. What really impressed me is every moment of
achievement after solving a math puzzle, feeling pride and
continuing working on with secretly delighted emotion. Therefore, I
have decided to sharpen my skill in math and statistics by attending
university to understand the principles behind phenomena and
chase grander career options in commercial fields.
After 12-years studying pure math and applied mathematics, I have
the relevant knowledge required for this course. I usually boast of
myself as a gifted person in logic and calculating, which can be
traced back to mathematical training from childhood: pages of
certificates can prove my strength, but I try not to be carried away
by pride. I aim to stay modest while chasing my goals at the same
time. I participated in the Chinese Mathematics Olympics and won a
prize for my province. Mathematics is not only the questions on the
paper, but also a habit of exploring problems in my daily life. The
application of Maths in society, including doing a survey and
analyzing the phenomena behind the data I gathered, is a relaxing
break from pure theory. After being taught about some junior
statistics models, I began to use practical verification, checking
whether it obeys the models or not. Typically, I wondered whether
in an archery situation, the possibility of each score would obey the
geometric sketch or not. It took me nearly a week to gather all the
data and come up with an answer: yes. I also did research on solar
elevation angle problems at regular intervals each day, obtaining
results consistently with the characteristics of trigonometric
functions. These experiments helped me with my patience and
understanding the hard work of doing mathematical research.
In addition to academic skills, I approach daily life with enthusiasm..
During my spare time, volunteering work is my favorite activity. I
used to work in nursing homes and museums every weekend and
made a significant contribution to Fiji local areas by working for two
weeks. In this volunteer service, I gained knowledge and the joy of
helping others which will help me mingle with classmates and
contribute to the community. Besides, I am concerned about world
affairs so I have a strong passion for the United Nations and dream
of working towards peace. Therefore, with the help of seniors and
teachers, I was exposed to the Model UN and rapidly became an
important component of the local MUN Association for secondary
students. In the venue, I calmly argued as well as practiced my
eloquence and analytical ability. I enjoyed imagining that I was the
character, attempting to bring in understanding of the subject and
understanding the inevitability and accident of history. I am also
qualified as the highest level of Yangqin (one of the traditional
Chinese instruments) and have had experience of performing in the
theater since a young age. Musical training has allowed me to seize
every meaningful moment in my life, as well as provided a method
to relax after a heavy day’s work.
I look forward to the training and to both academic and social
challenges I might meet in college study, because nothing can
destroy my persistence and optimism. Britain itself attracts me as
well both in historical and commercial ways. She is like an endless
sea that fishermen like me should live on, explore, protect and
develop properly. Therefore, I will put all my effort into acquiring
mathematical knowledge in order to have a range of choices in
fields related to mathematics in the future.
