Listening Strategies Based on Purpose and Familiarity with the Topic!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators


from public institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

What is It
When we listen, our goal is not only to listen but also to respond and interact with
others to show that we understand what we listened to. So, we listen for a purpose. Here are
the seven (7) types of activities for listening with a purpose.

The Seven (7) Types of Activities for Listening with a Purpose

1. Listening for the Main Idea

The purpose of this type of listening is to train students to grasp the main points or
general information presented in the audio. It is appropriate for short stories, songs, poems
and the likes.

2. Listening for Details

The purpose of this is to get specific information that are necessary or important. The
details maybe hours, dates, names, places, etc. It answers the questions, who,
what, when, where, how.

Day.

3. Listening for a Sequence

This is very useful in listening for instructions or procedure, like cooking or a DIY or do-
it-yourself audio. You need to get the right order or sequence. You need to write down series
of steps, so you will come up with the desired goal.

4. Listening for specific vocabulary

Listening may also be a strategy to broaden vocabulary. Like “Glowing Inside” is a new
word that has another meaning aside from what you already know. It can be a light produced
by a body heated to luminosity, incandescence for its denotative or (dictionary/literary
meaning) or a warm feeling, as of pleasure or well-being for its connotative (personal or
associated/related meaning).

5. Listening for Cultural Interest

The purpose of this is to give you a picture of a special holiday, tradition or occasion
which is popular with another culture. It usually answers the question:

6. Listening for Attitude and Opinions

Attitudes and opinions can be inferred from a listening text. It can convey varying
degrees of emotions or feelings from a mild criticism to strong disagreement. A student, like
you, should be able to discern different attitudes and opinions how the speaker feels.

7. Listening for Functional Language

The purpose of this listening activity is for conversation such as to accept or decline

and you are going to listen, say a conversation with your mother or over a phone or video call.
