What is It
When we listen, our goal is not only to listen but also to respond and interact with
others to show that we understand what we listened to. So, we listen for a purpose. Here are
the seven (7) types of activities for listening with a purpose.
The purpose of this type of listening is to train students to grasp the main points or
general information presented in the audio. It is appropriate for short stories, songs, poems
and the likes.
Example:
Questions Answers

3. Listening for a Sequence
This is very useful in listening for instructions or procedure, like cooking or a DIY or do-

of steps, so you will come up with the desired goal.

song ‘Christmas in our hearts? _3___singing of Merry Christmas

Listening may also be a strategy to broaden vocabulary. Like “Glowing Inside” is a new
word that has another meaning aside from what you already know. It can be a light produced
by a body heated to luminosity, incandescence for its denotative or (dictionary/literary
meaning) or a warm feeling, as of pleasure or well-being for its connotative (personal or
associated/related meaning).
Example:
Question Answer
What is the meaning of the word Denotative: Manger is found in a stable
manger? where grasses where put to feed horses.
Connotative: Manger symbolizes
humility because Jesus, even though a
son of God, was put on a manger when
He was born.
The purpose of this is to give you a picture of a special holiday, tradition or occasion
which is popular with another culture. It usually answers the question:
Example:
Question Answer

6. Listening for Attitude and Opinions
Attitudes and opinions can be inferred from a listening text. It can convey varying
degrees of emotions or feelings from a mild criticism to strong disagreement. A student, like
you, should be able to discern different attitudes and opinions how the speaker feels.

invitations, give suggestions or advice, etc. Example of this is your daily conversation where
you listen and react to the person you are conversing with. Here, someone tells you something
and you are going to listen, say a conversation with your mother or over a phone or video call.
