iv
What I Need to Know

Introduction
Information is everywhere. These may come from books we read,
magazines, billboards, newspapers or any other printed and digital materials.
Not only that, we also gain information on consistent basis from the people
around us and from the online platforms. While it’s good that we can access
information easily, there is also danger in the kind of information we get since
they may convey positive or negative messages.

Since information we acquire from different sources may pose positive

or negative messages, one can say that these pieces of information could
influence us differently. Influences may come in different forms and thus, how
we interpret the information and what we do with it can make a big difference
in how we conduct our daily lives.

In this module, you will explore the power of persuasion, deconstructing

media messages, and how we are informed. The activities in this module are
intended to inspire you to recognize persuasion —the positive and negative
messages, its power and to think critically about how you interact with
persuasive messages.

Filipinos are known for being sentimental. This trademark can be

observed usually in their celebrations. For instance, in celebrating weddings,
one can notice that Filipinos are very cautious with every detail. While it’s good
that they are very hands on and careful at the things they do during weddings,
they too have the tendency to overdo things. Filipinos too are usually in the
game of outdoing each, an attitude that often results to pressure and
overspending in attempt to make the wedding celebrations better that the others.

_____________________________________________________________

What Is It

Our actions, either verbal or non-verbal convey messages. Message is defined

as a verbal, written or recorded communication sent or left for a recipient. It may
also be a significant political, social or moral point that is presented by a film, speech,
gestures, etc.

These messages can be categorized depending on its purpose. One possible

purpose of a message is to persuade. Persuasion can be defined as a symbolic
process in which communicators try to convince other people to change their
attitudes through the transmission of a message in an atmosphere of free choice.
Specifically, a persuasive message is a request for action and it may appeal to logic
or to emotions. Basically, it has two types as well: the positive and negative
messages. Take a look at the diagram below to further understand these types of
persuasive messages.

Persuasion is already an integral part of our lives. Almost all we do in life

entails persuasion. We can also observe persuasion in the form of billboards,
infomercials, TV Commercials, merchandising companies, print ads, spam/pop-up
ads, sponsorship, telemarketing and social media.

4
Truly, persuasion is a common and an effective technique in changing our
thoughts and attitudes about certain matters. We find it not only in literature but in
our daily lives too. With this technique, writers and speakers’ express messages by
appealing to the audience emotionally and rationally in order to win them. Being able
to know this and the ability to recognize this kind of message will help anyone to
understand how this underlying information can change and influence our thoughts
and actions.

Activity 8: CRAFT YOUR OWN!

Directions: Read the passage below and create a positive or negative advertisement
to promote an advocacy. It can be in a form of a 2-stanza poem, poster
or any visual advertisement. An example is done for you. The rubric
below will be used to assess your work. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.

Children are particularly affected by the hunger crisis in Africa. There are far too
many starving kids in Africa, every single affected kid is one too much. Malnutrition
leads to physical and mental development delays and disorders and is a major cause
of high infant mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to UN data, 165 million children worldwide are too small for their age,
or stunted, due to chronic malnutrition. Three quarters of these children live in sub-
Saharan Africa and South Asia. In sub-Saharan Africa, 40% of children are
affected; in South Asia, 39%.3.2 million children under the age of 5 die each year in
sub-Saharan Africa - that's about half of the world's deaths in this age group.

Worldwide, nearly every second death in children under the age of five is due to
malnutrition. As this weakens the immune system, diseases such as pneumonia,
malaria or diarrhea often lead to death. The sub-Saharan child mortality rate is one
of the highest in the world, with one in nine children dying before the age of 5. In
Sierra Leone, one in every six children dies before the age of 5. Especially young
children die in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

11
C. Read the passage below and take one sentence that presents a positive message
and another statement that shows a negative idea.
Filipinos are recognized for their culture and values. They are known
internationally because of their attitudes especially in terms of hospitality.
However, just like any other thing, Filipino’s culture also includes some bad habits.
One of these is their practices during fiestas.

Fiesta is an occasion that is well-celebrated in the country. During this

celebration, families gather together. Filipinos are known for being family-oriented
thus the event is always spent with their families. However, it is not limited to
family members only since everyone can come, invited or not. See? The gesture
only shows that they are truly hospitable or welcoming to everyone. For this
reason, fiesta celebrations become something to look forward in the Philippines
although there are practices that should be avoided. One practice that Filipinos
should stop is the tendency to go overboard. Sometimes, a simple celebration can
become so lavish that they usually end up borrowing money just to celebrate. They
spend too much! It has also become a statement to showcase their wealth since
they usually prepare delicious food for their guests, spend their money ⎯even
savings, make them feel at home and feed them with anything while they are left
with almost nothing.
There is no harm in celebrating events like fiestas. It is already a practice
here in our country. However, there should be moderation. Remember, anything
done in excess always has negative effects.
