Manobo Tribe in the Mindanao

People/ Location - Manobo simply means “people” or


“person”; alternate names include
Manuvu and Minuvu. The term may
have originated from “Mansuba,” a
combination of man (people) and suba
(river).
- They mostly live in Sarangani,
Agusan del Sur, Davao provinces,
Bukidnon, and North and South
Cotabato.
History - Their origins can be traced back to the
early Malay peoples who came from
the surrounding islands of Southeast
Asia.
Language - Manobo language belongs to
the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the
Austronesian linguistic family, and it
is one of the 170 languages spoken in
the Philippines.
Governance, Issues and Problems - Some of the issues and concerns that
needed to be dealt with immediately
were civil registration, malnutrition,
basic education, health concerns of
elderly and children, registration of IP
political structure, inclusion of
ancestral domain, hygiene and
sanitation.
Cultural Values - The religious beliefs of the
Manobo revolve around many unseen
spirits interfering in the lives of
humans. They believe these spirits can
intrude on human activities to
accomplish their desires. The spirits
are also believed to have human
characteristics.
Arts, Culture and Heritage - known for weaving baskets, banig,
nigo, tribal costumes, baliog, or
accessories made of beads that are
highly made of bamboo and rattan
