Welcome
The Employability Hour is designed to encourage the exploration of potential careers within
the industry being studied, whilst developing essential skills that employers are looking for.
Short term and long-term career planning is at the heart of each of session, targeting the on-
going challenges and fluctuations in work readiness skills in young people. You should
explore job roles and have exposure to the current asks that employers have within the
current labour market. This will involve identifying and exploring the desired Employability
Skills (Mapped to the colleges Deal attributes). This will also include any specialist Industry
Skills, referred to as “Technical Skills”.

You will be presented with opportunities to:

 Explore potential career and progression options, via career planning through Career
Education and Guidance meetings (Short Term actions towards any long-term
aspirations). Have access to specialised level 6 qualified careers advice and
guidance.
 Be jointly assessed (Teacher and learner) on any skills that are mapped to The Deal
via a termly skills scan.
 Be working on objectives to address the above skills inside the Employability Hour
(Through practitioner planning) whilst also using the vehicle of work-related activity
(and placement for L1-L3).
 Prepare for job applications, interviews, and future placements.
 Experience the industry, with additional work-related activity.
Your employability lessons provide you with the chance to see what the world of work really
looks and feels like. Enjoy it, as it is your chance to learn a lot of new skills and become
more confident within a professional setting. It is also a great opportunity to test your
knowledge and understand the sports industry. Each lesson is a chance to build all the right
tools as this will be your first step on the career pathway.
The more you put into your employability, the more you will get out.

Your Employability Book

This book is full of useful information and advice to help you prepare to build for that dream
job. It will also help you maximise the skills you already have, and potential develop them
further during this upcoming academic year.
You will work with your vocational tutors, employability tutors and work placement officer to
help complete this booklet throughout the academic year. The booklet is your responsibility,
so look after it and keep it safe, as it will provide evidence which will help you complete your
mandatory placement hours, meet criteria for your vocational units and of course help you
make your next step in your career.
Highlight any links throughout the booklet that may link to vocational units.

Pre-Placement phone call / email

Phoning an employer is different to phoning a friend. It is important to work out what you
want to say before making the call.
Make the call before you attend your placement, ideally one week before you are due
to start. Make sure you have a pen, your placement details, some paper to write notes,
and this logbook.
Find a quiet place to make the call, introduce yourself and state you are calling to confirm
arrangements for your placement. During the phone call, you will need to find out or confirm
answers to the following topics:

 Where should you go on the first day e.g., reception or entrance?

 What time should you arrive?
 What time should you finish?
 Who should you ask for when you arrive?
 Do you need any special equipment?
 Will you be able to buy lunch or do you need to bring a packed lunch?
Make your employee aware of any health issues e.g. allergies or asthma.

Using Social Media at work
Social media now forms part of day to day life, and it is important you consider how
social media is used within the workplace.
You should assume anything posted online can be found and read by anyone
from your manager or a family member.
Many companies will be happy for you to use social media in relation to work, as
long as you are acting responsibly. Always check with the company at the start of
your placement on the social media policy, and what the expectations are for you
when using social media.
Companies have a responsibility to ensure they follow certain rules and regulations,
with client confidentiality being very important. It is important to always be aware of
the rules and regulations in order not to share or expose information about a
company’s clients or customers, as this could result in financial and reputational
damage for the business.

56
Health and Safety
All workplaces have some hazards. A hazard is something that has the potential to
cause harm, illness or damage health or property. The organisation has a
responsibility to control hazards, so you and other employees are safe.
 As a volunteer you also have responsibilities whilst in the workplace:
 Act responsibly and do not do anything to endanger others
 Be tidy in the workplace
 Follow all health and safety rules and signs
 Report anything you feel is dangerous such as spillages
You will have a health and safety briefing at the beginning of your first day, during
which you will be briefed on what to do if you have an accident, who the first aider is,
and what to do in case of a fire. Even if all rules are carefully followed, accidents
sometimes happen at work. If you are involved in an accident or witness an accident
you must inform your supervisor. You should also record it below and inform your
college tutor.
