SPATIAL ANALYSIS

VENTILATION

The circulation throughout the house is symmetrical.

As one enters the house the pathway leads to the
main building. The entrance gives an illusion of
grandeur with ornamentation on the doors and
windows enhancing the beauty of the house.

LIGHT ANALYSIS

Upon entering the main building the path is straight

towards the end of the house. On the way this path
diverges into different directions leading to the
bedrooms , the staircase, store room , kitchen,
bathroom and the wash area. One exits through the
end of the house into a backyard which has a little
garden with varieties of vegetations and many
coconut trees.

Government Polytechnic Ratnagiri (GPR), also

known as Shaskiya Tantrik Vidyalaya, is one of the
oldest institutes of Maharashtra Government
established in the year 1961 to impart technical
education in the Konkan region. The institute is
located in the vicinity of Thiba Palace and has a
green campus spread across 17 Acres land.The
campus has a few very old buildings still standing
strong while a few structures have been renovated
and some new buildings have also come up to
accomodate more students.

PLAN
The earlier structures showcase vernacular
architecture of the Konkan region with traditional
pitched roofs made of locally abundant sangwan and
fanas wood. Sangwan columns are erected to
provide support to the extended pitched roofs. While
the larger columns are made in traditional brick and
mortar. There are plenty windows in each classroom
and workshop to provide proper ventilation and a
comfortable learning place for the students who
used to study here.

LATHE WORKSHOPE The other building that could be accessed is an old lathe workshop. The lathe machines are still
functional and the building is still sometimes used by the students. The windows here have
intricate jali designs made in iron. All the doors and windows are arched with glass panels on the
top to provide an aesthetic element to the structure. There are brackets at the top edge of the wall
which supposedly help to carry heavy loads while the professor demonstrates during lectures.
These brackets were also made of iron and are embedded in the wall such that it is visible on the
front facade of the building.
