04 Types of grouting
What is
Grouting?
Geotechnical Engineering
Grouting
Defined as the injection of a special
liquid or slurry material called grout
into the ground for the purpose of
improving the soil or rock.

Types of Grout:
Cementitious grouts
Chemical grouts(fine sand and silts)
Objective of Grouting
It is used in foundation works before
construction to increase bearing capacity

To get the ground surface stronger

Grouting fills the empty spaces present below the

ground surface

It produces less permeable soil

Seepage pressure is eliminated

.
Application of Grouting

Producing mass concrete structures and piles

Fixing ground anchors for sheet pile walls, concrete pile walls,
retaining walls tunnels etc.

Repairing a ground underneath a formation or cracks and

structural

Defects on building masonry or pavement.

Fixing the tendons in prestressed post tensioned concrete

Filling the void between the lining and rock face in tunnel work
Principle of Grouting
The principle involved
in grouting is to
introduce grout
materials into the soil
either by pumping of
injecting of fluidized
materials using small
diameter tube

Slab Jacking
Methods of Grouting

slab jacking is to raise a slab in

place permanently, prevent
impact loading, correct faulty
drainage, and prevent pumping
at transverse joints by injection
of a grout under the slab.
Permeation
Grouting
Methods of Grouting

Permeation grouting consist of injection of a low viscosity

fluid in the soil pores without changes in soil physical
structure.
Done using chemical or cement grouts
Used to stabilize the soil before excavation

Permeation grouting is used to improve the

characteristics of soils, and can be used for the following
applications:
• Seepage control
• Slope stabilization
• Soil strengthening to reduce lateral support
requirement
• Settlement control, underpinning and excavation
support of granular soils during excavation

Compaction
Grouting
Methods of Grouting

LMG grouting is also known as limited mobility grouting. It consists

of the injection of low slump, low mobility grout (LMG) into loose or
loosened soils of appropriate grain size distribution.

Thin grout injected at high pressure. It is applicable for

cohesionless soils. The main effect of grout is to compact the
soil

Used to repair structures that have excessive settlement

Compaction grouting can be used for the following application:

• Correction of differential settlements of structures/raising of surficial

structuresSoil reinforcement
• Structural underpinning
• Ground strengthening adjacent to open excavation or tunneling

Jet Grouting
Methods of Grouting

Developed in Japan
Uses a special pipe with horizontal jets that inject grout
into the ground at high pressures
Jet grouting is an erosion/replacement system that
creates an engineered, in situ soil/cement product known
as Soilcretesm. Effective across the widest range of soil
types, and capable of being performed around
subsurface obstructions and in confined spaces, jet
grouting is a versatile and valuable tool for soft soil
stabilization, underpinning, excavation support and
groundwater control.

Jet grouting can be used for the following

applications:
• Water Control
• Settlement Control
• Underpinning
• Excavation Support
• Remedial Treatments – Gaps in Retaining Walls

Soil Fracture
Methods of Grouting

Fracture grouting is the injection of a cement

slurry grout, hydro fracturing soil,
creating lenses. The lenses compact
surrounding soil and then lift the overlying soil
and structures.

Soil Fracture can be used for the following applications:

• Raising settled structures
• Settlement control
• Underpinning
• Soil reinforcement
