Definitions of Science

1. Science as knowledge
--- the word science is derived from the Latin word scientia “knowledge”
--- from Latin word sciens, present participle of scire "to know”

2. Science is organized knowledge


--- German word wissenchaft “organized knowledge”

--- is a systematized body of knowledge base on facts as a result of observation


and experimentation used to predict future events.

3. Albert Einstein description


--- science is an attempt to make the chaotic diversity of our sense-experience
correspond to a logically uniform system of thought.

4. Science seeks truth


--- science serves as an instrument in the search for truth. By carrying out
experiments with instruments of progressively greater accuracy or by repeating
experiments, one arrives closer to the truth. However, since there are limits to scientific
understanding, one can never determine exactly or absolutely the truth.

TWO CATEGORIES OF SCIENCE


I. Natural Science
--- knowledge which gives information about our surroundings

3 DIVISIONS:
1. Biological Science/Life Science
--- study of living things and processes of life

Branches of biological Science


1. Zoology --- animals
2. Botany --- plants
3. Anatomy --- detailed parts of the body through dissections
4. Physiology --- functions of the different parts of the body
5. Pathology --- diseases
6. Cytology --- cells
7. Histology--- tissues
8. Genetics --- heredity and variation
9. Ecology --- environment and interrelationship of organisms on it
10. Microbiology --- microscopic organisms

2. Physical Science
--- study of the physical nature of matter and energy.

Branches of physical Science


1. Physics --- deals with the interactions of energy and matter, and such
concepts as the laws of motion and the effects of motion on matter
2. Chemistry --- composition, structure, properties of matter and the changes it
undergoes and the energy resulting from these changes

3. Earth Science
--- the study of earth structure and nature of universe

1. Astronomy --- heavenly bodies or celestial bodies
2. Geology --- earth’s structure, composition and history
3. Meteorology --- earth’s atmosphere, weather and climate
4. Geography --- earth’s surface, physical features and political divisions
5. Paleontology --- fossils of plants and animals

II. Social Science


--- knowledge that gives information about way people acts and lives with each
other

Branches of Social Science


1. Sociology --- origin of human society and social relationship
2. Psychology --- human behavior, mental and emotional processes
3. Political Science --- methods of government
4. Economics --- goods and services, finance, taxation and problems of employment
5. Archeology --- past cultures through artifacts
6. History --- past events causes and effects
7. Anthropology --- man’s social development
