2 DEFINITIONS OF SCIENCE
3 DIVISIONS:
A. Biological Science/Life Science ---Life science is an enormous field of study that examines every
living thing on earth. Life science studies life in all its forms, past and present and study the biology of
how organisms live.
B. Physical Science ---Physical science is the study of matter and energy. It covers natural sciences,
dealing with non-living materials.
C. Earth Science ---Earth science is the study of the Earth's structure, properties, processes, and years of
biotic evolution.

1. Astronomy --- Astronomy is the study of everything in the universe beyond Earth’s atmosphere. That
includes objects like the Sun , the Moon , the planets, and the stars . It also includes faraway galaxies and
tiny particles.
2. Geology --- Geology is the study of the structure, evolution and dynamics of the Earth and its natural
mineral and energy resources. Geology investigates the processes that have shaped the Earth through its
4500 million (approximate!) year history and uses the rock record to unravel that history.
3. Meteorology --- the science of atmospheric properties and phenomena—science that includes the
atmosphere’s physics and chemistry.
4. Geography --- Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and
their environments.
5. Paleontology --- Paleontology is the study of the history of life on Earth as based on fossils. Fossils are
the remains of plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, and single-celled living things that have been replaced by
rock material or impressions of organisms preserved in rock.
II. Social Science --- Social Science is the study of society and the manner in which people behave and
influence the world around us.
