VECTORS &SCALARS
SCALARS-Measurable quantities having their magnitude only.
***denoted by lowercase italic letters such as c, d, r, s, t.
VECTORS-In physics and engineering, a vector is characterized by two quantities (length
and direction) and is represented by a directed line segment.
***denoted by lowercase bold face letters such as u, v, x, y and z.
Basic Vector Operations
1. VECTOR ADDITION
Basic Vector Operations
2. SCALAR MULTIPLICATION
Vector addition and scalar multiplication share many properties with matrix addition and scalar multiplication.
The ten properties listed in the next theorem play a fundamental role in linear algebra.
PROBLEM:

1. For what values of a and b are the vectors (a-b,2) and (4, a+b) equal?
2. For what values of a, b, and c are the vectors (2a-b,a-2b,6) and (-2,2,a+b-2c)
equal?
