HISTORY
● NYC was found in the first half of the 17th century
● First inhabitants were the Dutch
● NYC was originally called the New Amsterdam
● The oldest building is the School house on Staten Island
GENERAL INFORMATION
● NYC has 8 000 000 inhabitants, and lot of them are immigrants, especially
from Europe or from Asia
● It’s the largest city in the USA
● Is situated on the eastern coast of the USA, at the Hudson River, state New
York
● Nickname = Big Apple
● The modern NYC was built on a grid plan of streets and avenues (they have no
names, just numbers)
● There are few streets with the name:
Broadway = famous centre of theatres
The Wall Street = center of the financial life
● 5th ave - avenue with a lot of luxurious shops
● NYC is divided into 5 parts (= Boroughs) -> Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens,
Bronx, Staten Island
● There is a part called Harlem (north Manhattan), where mostly the black people
live
● Parts - Little Italy, Chinatown and Soho - there you can find many shops and
restaurants in the local style

SKYSCRAPERS
● EMPIRE STATE BUILDING - famous skyscraper, it has 102 floors, TV tower -
it used to be the highest building in the world
● WORLD TRADE CENTER - nowadays the highest building in NYC
● ROCKEFELLER CENTER - another skyscraper, where the main NYC
Christmas tree and Ice rink are located
FAMOUS PLACES
● St. PATRICK’s CATHEDRAL - the largest Roman Catholic church in USA
● CENTRAL PARK - park in Manhattan, where New Yorkers like spending free time,
there are some lakes there and many concerts in the open air take place there
● galeries - MOMA (museum of modern art) and MET (metropolitan museum of art)
● 9/11 MUSEUM AND MEMORIAL
● BROOKLYN BRIDGE - bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan
● TIMES SQUARE - famous square, where are many billboards, ads and shops located,
also is the place where famous glass ball is going down on New Years Eve
STATUE OF LIBERTY
● Most famous monument in NYC
● Stands on the Liberty Island
● It is a statue of woman who symbolizes freedom and friendship between
Americans and French during the American revolution
● Holds a burning torch (right hand) and the Law book (left hand)
● Statue was constructed in France by Eiffel and then was moved to the NYC in
october 1886
● Is made from cuprum (reason why is green is oxidizing)
TRANSPORT
● SUBWAY - the main vehicle in NYC is Subway - It has 34 lines and is 118 years
old
● airports - JOHN F. KENNEDY, LAGUARDIA…
● train stations - PENN STATION, GRAND CENTRAL TRAIN STATION…

SPORT
● YANKEES - the best New York’s BASEBALL team
● KNICKS - the best NY’s BASKETBALL team
● RANGERS - ice HOCKEY team
