PART 6: HEALTH AND SPIRITUALITY

By E.G.. While

I. THE LAWS OF HEALTH

1. All the laws of nature—which are the laws of God— are designed for our good.
Obedience to them will promote our happiness in this life and will aid us in preparation for the
life to come (CDF 295).

2. He who remains in sinful ignorance of the laws of life and health, or who willfully
violates these laws, sins against God (CT 295).

3. The development of all our powers is the first duty we owe to God and our fellowmen. In
making a profession of faith in Christ we pledge ourselves to become all that is possible for us to
be as workers for the Master, and we should cultivate every faculty to the highest degree of
perfection (COL 348

4. The physical life is to be carefully preserved and developed that through humanity the
divine nature may be revealed in its fullness (COL 348).

5. A continual transgression of nature's laws is a continual transgression of the law of God

(4T 30).

6. Yes, we are God's property, and the path of obedience to nature's laws is the direct path to
heaven (COL 222).

H. HEALTH AND SPIRITUALITY

7. Health is more closely related to conscience and religion than many realize (CH 566).

8. It must; kept before the people that the right balance of the mental and the moral powers
depends in a great degree on the right conditions of the physical system (MH 335).

9. The I- I/is the only medium through which the mind and soul are developed for the up
building of character Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfee -
bling and degrading of these physical powers (MH 130).

10. Sine; he mind and the soul find expression through the body, both mental and spiritual
vigor are in great degree dependent upon physical strength and activity. Whatever promotes
physical-health, promotes the development of a strong mind and a well balanced character
Without health, no one can as distinctly understand as completely fulfill his obligation to
himself, to his fellow beings, or to his Creator (Ed 195).
11. Let none who profess godliness regard with indifference the health of the body, and
flatter themselves that intemperance is no sin, and will not affect their spirituality. A close
sympathy exists between the physical and the moral nature. Any habit which do not promote
health degrades the higher and nobler faculties (SL 25).

12. Whatever injures the health not only lessens the physical vigor, but tends to weaken the
mental and moral powers. Indulgence in any unhealthful practice makes it more difficult for one
to discriminate between right and wrong, and hence more difficult to resist the evil (MH 128).

13. The better you observe the laws of health, the more clearly you can discern the values of
eternal thing? (ML 141).

14. The state of the mind has largely to do with the health of the body, and especially with
the health of the digestive organs (CDF 75).

15. Every violation of principle in eating or drinking, blunts the perceptive faculties, making
it impossible for them to appreciate or place the right value upon eternal things (CH 38).

16. The brain is the capital of the body. If the perceptive faculties become benumbed
through intemperance of any kind, eternal things are not discerned (Redemption and Temptation
of Christ in the Wilderness, p. 56).

17. The brain is affected by the condition of the stomach (7T 257).

18. If the stomach is not properly cared for, the formation of an upright, moral character
will be hindered TT 160).

19…. the diet materially affects the mind and disposition (AH 252)

20. Every habit that injures reacts upon the mind (CT 298).

21. When the intellect is clouded, the moral powers are enfeebled, and sin does not look
sinful. The most ennobling, grand and glorious themes of God's Word seem but idle tales. Satan
can then easily snatch away the good seed that has been sown in the heart: for the soul is in no
condition to comprehend or understand its true value (OHC 266).

22. Reforms and continual reforms must be kept before the people, and by our example we
must enforce our teachings. True religion and the laws of health go hand in hand (CH 445).
III. HEALTH AND SANCTIFICATION

23. The sanctification set forth in the Sacred Scriptures has to do with the entire being-
spirit, soul, and body. Here is the true idea of entire consecration. Paul prays that the church at
Thessalonica may enjoy this great blessing. The very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I
pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our
Lord Jesus Christ (SL.23).

24. A strict compliance with the requirements of God is beneficial to the health of body and
mind. In order to reach the highest standard of moral and intellectual attainments, it is necessary
to seek wisdom and strength from God and to observe strict temperance in all the habits of Iif(SL
23).

25. Let i; ever be kept before the mind that the great object of hygienic reform is to secure
the highest possible development of mind and soul and body. All the laws of nature-which are
the laws of God-are designed for our good. Obedience to them will promote our happiness in this
life, and will aid u;» in preparation for the life to come (CDF 23).

26. It was in love that our heavenly Father sent the light of health reform to guard against
the evils that result from unrestrained indulgence of appetite (COL 243).

27. Our heavenly Father sent the light of health reform to guard against the evils resulting
from a debased appetite, that those who love purity and holiness may know how to use with
discretion the good things He has provided for them, and that by exercising temperance in daily
life, they may be sanctified through the truth (CH 120,121).

28. God has permitted the light of health reform to shine upon us in these last days, that by
walking in the light we may escape many dangers to which we will be exposed (3T 561).

29. Health reform is one branch of the great work which will fit a people for the coming of
the Lord (CDF 69).

30. God calls for every church member to dedicate his life unreservedly to the Lord's ser-
vice. He calls for the decided reformation. All creation is groaning under the curse. God's people
should place themselves where they will grow in grace, being sanctified body, soul, and spirit, by
the truth. When they break away from all health-destroying indulgences, they will have a clearer
perception of what constitutes true godliness. A wonderful change will be seen in the religious
experience 'IF 579).

31. Sinful indulgence defiles the body and unfits men for spiritual worship. He who
cherishes the light which God has given him upon health reform has an important aid in the work
of becoming sanctified through the truth and fitted for immortality.
IV. HEALTH AND PERFECTION OF CHARACTER
32. Perfection of character cannot be attained when laws of nature are disregarded; for this
is the transgression of the law of God (OHC 266).

33. The health reform is one branch of the great work which is to fit a people for the
coming of the Lord (COL 20,21).

34. The work of health reform is the Lord's means... for purifying His church (CDF 456).

V. TEMPERANCE
35. All narcotics and unnatural stimulants that enfeeble and degrade the physical nature
tend to lower the ,one of the intellect and morals.

36… Our eternal destiny depends upon strictly temperate habits... (3T 489).

37. The highest evidence of nobility in a Christian is self-control (DA 301).

38. Yd cannot attain to Christian perfection unless you possess perfect control of your own
spirit (2T 31).

39. Temperance in eating must be practiced before you can be a patient man (2T 405).

VI APPETITE

40. Christ knew that in order to successfully carry forward the plan of salvation He must
commence the work of redeeming man just where the ruin began. Adam fell on the point of
appetite (Temperance, pp. 19,20).

41. His first test was on the same point where Adam failed. It was through temptations
addressed to the appetite that Satan had overcome a large proportion of the human race, and his
success had made him feel that the control of this fallen planet was on his hands. But in Christ he
found one who was able to resist him. And he left the field of battle a conquered foe (Id., p. 20).

42. Satan was defeated in his object to overcome Christ upon the point of appetite. And here
in the wilderness Christ achieved a victory in behalf of the race upon the point of appetite,
making it possible ft: r man, in all future time in His name to overcome the strength of appetite
on his own behalf (Id., p. 20).
43. Sins of the greatest magnitude through the indulgence of perverted appetite (4T 30).
44. Adam and Eve lost Eden through the indulgence of appetite, and we only regain it by
the denial of the same (RH, Oct. 21, 188_).
45. By the indulgence of perverted appetite, man loses his power to resist temptation (MH
335 ).

46. Indulgence of appetite strengthens the animal propensities, giving them ascendancy
over the mental and spiritual powers (SL 25).

47. If we would be sanctified, in soul body and spirit, we must live in conformity to the
divine law. The heart cannot preserve consecration to God while the appetites and passionate
indulged at the expense of health and life (SL 29).

48. If Christians will keep the body in subjection, and bring all their appetites and passions
under the control of enlightened conscience, feeling it a duty that they owe God and to their
neighbors to obey The laws which govern health and life, they will have the blessing of physical
and mental vigor (4T 35,36).

49. We need to learn that indulged appetite is the greatest hindrance to mental improvement
and soul Sanctification (9T 156).

50. God demands that the appetite be cleansed, and that self-denial be practiced in regard to
those things- which are not good. This is a work that will have to be done before His people can
stand before him perfected people (9T 154).

51. 1 he highest attainment in the Christian life is the control of appetite. Without this
victory, all hope of heaven is vain (CTBH 206).

52. The controlling power of appetite will prove ruin of thousands, when, if they had con quered on
this point, they would have had moral power to gain the victory over every other temptation of Satan (CH
574).

53. ...but those who are slaves to appetite will fail in perfecting Christian character (3T 492).

54. It is impossible for those who indulge the appetite to attain Christian perfection (2T 400).

55....our only hope of eternal life is through bringing the appetites and passions into subjection to
the will of God (DA 122).

56. Moses preached a great deal on this subject and the reason the people did not go through to the
promised land was because of repeated indulgence of appetite (RH, Oct. 21,188 J.
