In the space below, answer/complete the following:

(a) Are the results you obtained in part A1 consistent with Table 6.1?

(b) Write a brief outline/summary of how you determined the identity of your two unknowns.

The results obtained in part A1 are consistent with Table 6.1.

I determined the identity of my unknowns by comparing the mixtures that produced chemical reactions to
the data recorded in part A1. If one or more of the same changes were present for different chemicals, I
compared the next reaction in the series.
Part C. Melting point determination of acetylsalicylic acid
129.3 to 134.2 degrees celsius
Melting point of dry product: Your data: _____________________

Compare your melting point to (a) the literature value.

The literature value for melting point is 133 to 135 degrees C. The end temperature
isn't far off at all, and the beginning temperature is only about four degrees off.

Postlab questions
1. Use the data in Part A to predict what may be observed from an aqueous mixture of:
a. potassium carbonate and hydrochloric acid
CO2 may form

b. zinc chloride and silver nitrate

A precipitate may form

c. magnesium chloride and sodium hydroxide

A color change and/or precipitate may form

d. ammonium nitrate and sodium hydroxide

Ammonia gas may form

2. Write and balance the complete AND net ionic equations for the following combination
(Note: the introduction of this experiment may be useful in answering this question.):
CuCl2 (aq) + Na2S (aq) o Products?
CuCl2 + Na2S = CuS + 2NaCl

Cu + S = CuS
