1.2 On average, a human heart beats once every second. How many times will a human
heart beat in a 365 day year? (2)

1.3 A book has 312 pages. If each page is 0.052mm thick, and the cover pages (front and
back) are 0.42mm thick each, what is the thickness of the book? (3)

1.4 Your favourite shop is offering a discount of 20% on an item of clothing which
costs R180. How much does it cost after discount? (3)

1.5 Bananas are sold at R5.95 per kilogram. How much would you pay for 0.4kg of
bananas? (2)

1.6 Convert the following:

a) 1346 meters to kilometres (1)

b) 12 074 mm to meters (2)

c) 2.5 litres to millilitres (1)

1.7 Jessica got 13 out of 20 on a maths test. Simon got 26 out of 40 for his test. Calculate
both marks as a percentage. (2)

1.8 In a grade 8 class, 14 learners are male and 21 learners are female, what is the ratio of
males to females in the class (in simplest form)? (1)

2.1 You invest R600 for 3 years at 6.7% simple interest.

2.2 Tony took a loan from a bank of R8 000. He has to pay the loan back at 12.5% simple
interest over 3 years. What will Tony’s monthly installment be? (3)

2.3 Zinhle has just finished Matric. She has got a job and has just moved into a flat.
Her expenses are as follows:

Her salary is R5200 a month. She also makes R150 every Wednesday for babysitting.
The rent on her flat is R1850 a month. She spends about R300 a week on food. Her
cellphone contract costs R185 a month and she also has a gym contract that costs R220
a month.

a) Complete the following table (use the answer sheet) to summarise Zinhle’s income

The following cool-drink can has a diameter of 65mm and a height of 11cm.

5.1 Convert 65mm to cm. (2)

5.2 Calculate the radius of the circular base in cm. (2)

5.3 Use the formula πr²h (r = radius and h = height) to calculate the volume of the
can in cm³. (2)

5.4 Calculate the surface area of the can if the formula is 2πr(r + h). (2)
