Vermont Ravens vs Rhode Island Riptide

WORLD AUTOMOTIVE & SPORTS OCTOBER 12, 2011

LEFT: Vermont Ravens lineman Anthony Michie enjoys a little quiet time with his son Kayden before getting down to business in the Ravens rst ever home playoff game. RIGHT: Ravens Wide Receiver Clayton Torres turned this juggling catch into a Touchdown, but it wasnt enough as Vermont fell to the Rhode Island Riptide 34-12 in the opening round of the New England Football Leagues Maritime Conference Playoffs. This was the rst ever home playoff game for the Ravens, who nished atop the Western Division with a 6-2 regular season record.

Brian Hoar Wins Third Milk Bowl Of His Career

Nick Sweet of Barre was right on Hoars rear bumper most of the way and also nished with 14 points. Sweets second place nish behind Hoar in the last segment gave Hoar the victory. Hoars victory earned him over $10,000 in prize money a cold drink of milk and of course the opportunity to kiss the cow. Scott Payea of Milton placed third with 22 points, Phil Scott nished forth with 23 points and Jean-Paul Cyr came in fth with 24 points. Champion stock car driver Adam Pierson put an exclamation point on his 2011 season by winning the second annual New England Dirt Track Championships presented by The Home Depot, Lake Sunapee Bank, Miller Auto Group, and Garys Tire & Auto at Bear Ridge Speedway on Saturday, September 24th, in front of a packed house. Pierson capped his title-winning season in the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified division by winning the 50-lap season finale and pocketing the $1,000 winners purse. By virtue of winning a special New England Dirt Track Championship qualifying race on July 16, the Fairlee driver started inside the top-six for the main event. After trailing Gary Pierson for several laps, Pierson took command before halfway and led to the end for his fifth victory of the season. The 27-year-old driver of the No. 15 CDR Concrete/Wings Market & Deli-sponsored Bicknell chassis clinched his seventh career championship last week. Another former champion, Vince Quenneville, Jr., of Brandon finished second in just his second start of the season. Chris Donnelly of Piermont, N.H. was third ahead of Siemons and Jason Gray. Kevin Chaffee, Justin Comes, rookie Josh Sunn, Dan Eastman, and Jim Morgan completed the unofficial top ten. Donnelly clinched his first Bear Ridge Speedway track championship in the WYKR Sprint Car division by finishing second in the 25-lap Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) feature. Rookie Tyler Rich of Lyme, N.H. piloted a car owned by Donnelly to his first career victory in dominant fashion. Dan Douville of Bridgewater, N.H. finished third in the race and beat Donnelly for his first SCoNE tour championship. Terry Williams won his third Wells River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe feature of the year in a 40-lap race, with Jason Horniak second and Gene Pierson, Jr., third. Josh Harrington of Topsham finished fourth in the race and clinched his second career championship.

with Steve Poulin

To observe Brian Hoars jubilation in Thunder Roads Victory Lane at Sundays Peoples United Bank Milk Bowl you would never know the eight time ACT Late Model Tour champion had just claimed his third career win in the prestigious short track event. In fact the casual observer would think it was the rst time the talented driver had ever won a race. the emotions were that strong. Hoar won two segments of the unique three segment event, the rst and the last both times holding off a hard charging Nick Sweet. In the second segment, Sweet and Hoar both came from the back to nish tenth and 12th, respectively resulting in a three segment combined total point tie. The pair nished with a combined 14points with Hoar winning the tie breaker with a better nish in the nal segment. Scott Payea nished third overall with an22 point total while Lt Governor Phil Scott and Jean-Paul Cyr rounded out the top ve. Bradfords Derrick ODonnell picked up his third win of the season in the Bond Auto Parts Tiger Sportsman feature and added the 2011 division crown to his resume. In other Road action Hardwicks Greg Adams Jr. claimed the 2011 Allen Lumber Street Stock Championship by just three points after nishing sixth in the season nale. Troy Kingsbury claimed the feature win. Jimmie Johnson answered all questions and quieted the critics about his readiness to contend for a sixth straight Sprint Cup title with a dominating performance in Sundays Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. Johnson held off hard-charging Kasey Kahne in a green-white-checkeredag nish set up by Chase contender and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordons blown engine on Lap 265. Johnson beat Kahne to the nish line by .548 seconds in a race that went ve laps beyond its scheduled distance of 267 laps. The win was the second of the season for Johnson, the 55th of his career and the 20th in 74 career Chase races. He left Kansas tied with Rusty Wallace for eighth on the all-time win list. Brad Keselowski came home third, followed by Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards, who salvaged a top-ve despite falling two laps down earlier in the event. Edwards retained the lead in the Chase by one point over Kevin Harvick, who salvaged a sixth place nish. Johnsons win moved him closer to the top of the standings, leaving Kansas in third place, four point s behind Edwards. The win was the 199th for Hendrick Motorsports and gave Chevrolet the 2011 manufacturers championship assuming a Chevrolet will start each of the remaining six races. Brad Keselowski just didnt dominate Saturdays Kansas Lottery 300 Nationwide Series race at Kansas Speedway he took every driver in the eld out back to the woodshed for an ole fashioned whoopin. The reigning series champion passed Carl Edwards with just over 13 laps left and pulled away to win by 2.795 seconds- his fourth series win of the season and the 16th of his career. Elliott Sadler ran third, followed by Paul Menard and Nationwide Series points leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Stenhouse leads Elliott Sadler by 20 points in the series standings with four races left in the season. Early season point leader Reed Sorenson, driving the Randy MacDonalds No 82 Dodge after his sudden ouster from the No 32 Turner Motorsports Chevy earlier in the week, ran 26th, two laps down. Sorenson remains third in the points standings but fell from 49 to 70 behind Stenhouse. With his runner-up nish in the No 60 Roush Fenway Ford Carl

The Sprint Cup Series worse keep secret was revealed Friday when Michael Waltrip Racing announced that it had signed Clint Bowyer to a threeyear deal to drive the No 15 Toyota next season. Bowyer, who couldnt put together an agreement for next season with Richard Childress Racing, his current team, will bring sponsor 5-Hour ENERGY along for 24 races beginning with the Daytona 500. Bowyers contract with RCR will expire after a successful six-year run that included three Chase berths and four wins. News of the deal began leaking out at New Hampshire but the native of Emporia, Kansas wanted to wait until last weekend at the 1 1/2-mile tri-oval at Kansas, his home track. Part of Bowyers departure at Richard Childress Racing is anticipated to be able to give Childress time to get his grandsons Austin & Ty Dillon seat time over the next few years. Current Camping World Truck Series point leader, Austin will move full time to the Nationwide Series next season. He made his rst Cup debut on Sunday. Both Bowyer and Childress promise there are no hard feelings- but. Its all about the future, Bowyer said with a grin. The futures bright. Reed Sorenson was bounced from his seat at Turner Motorsports earlier last week despite sitting third in the Nationwide Series point standingsjust 49 points behind leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr with ve races to go. Sorenson has one series win this season and picked up a last minute ride in the MacDonalds NO 82 Dodge for Saturdays race. Brian Vickers was named to replace Sorenson in Turners No 32 Chevrolet at Kansas.

What theyre Saying

Obviously, when we get a new conguration of a racetrack, theres concerns from our side as we monitor engine rpms, gear ratios, so on and so forth as the teams nd their new way around the track.

The track obviously takes a different line today than what it did before the repave. I liken it a lot to being able to go through my front door at night in pitch darkness and be able to walk through my living room, negotiate my way into the kitchen, nd the light switch without any interference until the night that I come home and my wife has rearranged the furniture in the living room and I trip and fall halfway through. Its the same thing.

Everybody has great memories, great notebooks. Theyre all based around the old conguration of Phoenix. A lot of today was spent in understanding whats different, understanding whats different with the banking, the doglegs, the ups and downs of the elevation, everything thats changed. At the same time the main agenda for today was to gure out the fastest way around Phoenix International Raceway with this new conguration. - John Darbys perspective on day one of the Phoenix Intl Raceway test after the repave.

Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, Mass. claimed his second American Canadian Tour Invitational after a thrilling battle with Barres Nick Sweet at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H. on Saturday, September 24. MacDonald and Sweet swapped the lead four times over the final 15 laps of the 50 mile event on the Magic Mile. The race wasnt decided until the final corner, when MacDonald edged Sweet coming off turn four to take the checker and the $4,000 pay day. MacDonald seemed to have a slightly better car on the restarts, but Sweet came back strong after a couple of laps. MacDonald came from the 25th starting position to take the lead on lap 32. Sweet came from the 27th starting spot and cleared traffic on lap 35. The 2010 Thunder Road Champion set his sights on MacDonald with just 15 laps to go. It took him just five laps to run down the Inaugural ACT Invitational Champion and take the lead on lap 40, before the second caution of the event on lap 41. MacDonald took the lead back after the caution, but held on for just two laps before Sweet took over again. Sweet would lead until the final caution on lap 45. One lap after the restart, MacDonald took over for good, but not without a fight from Sweet. The two took the white flag side-by-side as the crowd rose to their feet. Sweet had the inside line and seemed to have the advantage down the back stretch. The two stayed door-to-door through turns three and four, but Sweet got loose coming out of four giving MacDonald the edge. We were lucky at the end. I was so psyched to get my new sponsor, Hancock Electric, in victory lane, said MacDonald. I didnt know it was Nick (Sweet) in that car. I feel bad cutting him off, but wanted to do everything I could to win. Great race at the end, said Sweet. Everything happens to me in twos (at NHMS). Three years ago we finished second to Eddie (MacDonald). Last year we wrecked on lap two. This year we finished second to Eddie (MacDonald) again. Former Oxford Plains Speedway Champion Shawn Martin of Turner, Maine led early and held off two-time White Mountain Motorsports Park Champion Quinny Welch of Lancaster, N. H. in the late stages of the event to take third. Brad Leighton, a former NHMS track champion from Center Harbor, N. H. edged out eight-time ACT Champion Brian Hoar of Williston at the line to complete the top five.

Eddie MacDonald Wins Thrilling ACT Invitational at NHMS

FALL CAR CARE

Today I felt like I was on top of the world, said Martin. That was probably the race of my life. Hoar, last years Invitational winner Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, N. H., Tom Carey, Jr. of New Salem, Mass., former Srie ACT Castrol Champion Karl Allard of St-Felicien, Quebec and Glen Luce of Turner, Maine completed the top ten. The 50 mile, third annual ACT Invitational was completed in 45 minutes and 36 seconds with three cautions including the first on lap 27 for debris. The lead was swapped six times between four drivers. MacDonald edged Sweet by just 0.161 seconds. The ACT season will come to a close this weekend with the Rent-A-Wreck Fall Foliage 200 at Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, New York on Saturday, October 8.

Hometown driver Tyler Stygles wrapped up his first A Notch Above Automotive Limited Late Model championship in strange and dramatic fashion. Stygles entered the race just two points ahead Robert Tucker; as Tucker led the 30-lap race, Stygles ran in second spot and appeared to have the championship in hand, but nearly spun his car and fell back in the field on two separate occasions, handing the point lead temporarily to Tucker. Tuckers steering broke two laps shy of the finish, though, and Stygles recovered to finish third and take the championship. Fourteen year-old Jordan Fornwalt took the fourth win of his rookie season, with Ryan Christian second. Tucker was scored seventh in the race and finished 14 points behind Stygles, unofficially. Kevin Harran of St. Johnsbury sealed his first career Bear Ridge title with a fourth-place finish in the Weglarz Property Service Fast Four division. Travis Hull took his third consecutive victory in the 25-lap feature race, followed by Danny Doyle and rookie Bobby Bell. KDD NAPA Auto Parts Hornet driver Eric Lang of Groton notched his track-leading 11th win of the year and earned his first championship. Tom Placey finished second with Charlie Lakin third. Mike Stender was uninjured in a hard flip on the frontstretch. Scott Holcomb of Granby, Ct. took his second victory of the season in a two-segment exhibition race for the USAC Dirt Midget Association. Track champion Joe Krawiec was second followed by Kevin Chaffee. With the completion of the second annual New England Dirt Track Championships, Bear Ridge Speedways 44th season of stock car racing has come to a close. Details regarding the tracks annual awards banquet in December will be forthcoming.
