-The act of Genocide can be described as erasing/destroying a part or


sometimes an entire ethnic, national, or religious group.

-It is the act of deliberately killing many people from a nation or


ethnic group in the aim to destroying.

-Some of the major Genocides that have taken part in human history
are, the Rwa nda n Genocide, Ca mbodia n Genocide, a nd The Holoca ust.
WHO CAME UP WITH THE TERM
“ G E N O C I D E ” A N D H OW ?

The Term “Genocide” was declared by Raphael Lemkin.


-Raphael Lemkin was a Polish-Jewish lawyer who fled from
Nazi occupation. He arrived in the United States in 1941.
-Lemkin was shocked when he learned about the deaths of
hundreds and thousands of Armenians during the Turkish
Massacre.
-He later sets a terminology which defines the Nazi crimes
against the European jews during the 2nd World War.
-In 1944, He formulates the Term, “Genocide” by the Greek
word “genos”, meaning race or tribe, with the latin suffix
“cide”, meaning to kill.
Causes of Genocide

The 20th Century, was known as the century of genocide. The three main
causes of Genocide were Economic depression, propaganda and
dehumanization. In the past, Political leaders have used specific groups as
scapegoats during times of conflict and revolution. Genocides were known as
illegal due to both the endangerment of the world and the victimized
groups.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, World leaders were allowed to harm
their citizens based on group identity.

Genocides have affected people all over the world. There has been a record
of 9 major genocides that have taken place during the 20th century.

Genocide has killed lives of Millions, leaving people scared and sorrowful.

In today's time, we have learned from the mistakes in the past and we are trying
our best for not letting it happen once again.

Lessons are being taught and organizations are tying to help avoid conflicts as
such.

Some of those organizations being, United Nations, The Sentinel Project and
STAND Canada.
