Working Paper- Topic A:

Bridging the climate challenge and sustainable education

Background: Plastic waste management becomes increasingly important problem in the

World. Only 9% of total amount of plastic is being recycled, while large part of non-recycled
plastic is stored in inadequate way or gets burned. Production of plastic requires
ecologically unacceptable fossil fuels, while burning it releases damaging greenhouse gases.
Pollution of oceans by microplastics is harmful to marine species and biodiversity.

It is also noted that developing countries have more significant problems with plastic waste
production and management compared to more developed nations, largely due to their
economic disadvantage and fast-growing population.

Conclusion: Plastic waste production and management is a globally important ecological

problem. The international community should focus on helping less developed nations to
decrease plastic pollution.

We propose establishing of a special UN fund which will be used for subsidizing

construction of recycling plants in developing countries:

- Lack of local communal infrastructure for collecting plastic waste can be solved in a
way which may also contribute in rising employment- the recycle plants would pay
people who bring them collected plastic garbage.
- These people would be paid proportionately to the amount of garbage they bring.
- That measure would encourage unemployed people to work as official or unofficial
waste-collectors and will increase income of both Plant and collectors.
- The proposed measure would also encourage households to collect and separate
their waste.
- The Fund could also help the plants to find buyers for their products.
- The Fund would be open for donations from private, state, international and other
donators.

The proposed solution would contribute to decrease of plastic waste production,

improvement of plastic waste management in the most vulnerable areas and prosperity of
less developed countries and more equal distribution of goods in the World.

We encourage other countries to support this initiative.
