Performing Tips and Ideas

For
The Friendly Dragon
During my medieval thematic unit my students would choose a medieval
character and make a hand puppet. Then during our culminating event (The
Medieval Fair) we performed several puppet shows in our giant cardboard
castle puppet theater made from large appliance boxes.

I wrote this play to include my low performing 3rd grade and/or ESOL
students as well as some reluctant public speakers who were either too shy
or too quiet to speak alone. This is a very versatile script that allows for
multiple characters to be on stage and speak or act minimally and with peers
in various parts of the play.

I split the narration into 3 narrator parts, however it could easily be read by
only one person if you choose.

With younger students the narration could be done by a teacher with the
children taking only the more active character parts.

A dragon was NOT one of the character puppets my students could

choose to make, so for the dragon Rex, I used a large cardboard cut out of a
dragon from the waist up. In each different scene before the dragon appears
and tries to join a group we attached a related cardboard prop to the cut out.

Knights - sword in hand

Jesters - jester hat on head
Wizards - wizard hat on head
Minstrels - guitar in hand
Princesses - no prop

Narrator 1 - Rex took the opportunity to introduce himself. He talked
of the love, beauty and kindness in his heart. Then he said that what he
wanted most in the world was friends.

Narrator 2 - Then a big dragon sized tear slipped from his eye as he
told them how everyone was too afraid of him to give him a chance.

Narrator 3 - Well, those little princesses were impressed with Rex’s

sweet speech and they decided to help him.

Narrator 1 - They took him all around the kingdom and showed
everyone that he was kind and friendly despite his fierce appearance.

(Princesses mime introducing Rex as all the other characters return)

Narrator 2 - Everyone felt sorry that they had judged Rex by how he
looked. (Others hang heads in shame)

Narrator 3 - They asked Rex to forgive them (heads up) and said they
would love to hear him talk of all the happiness in his heart. (nod in
agreement)

All Narrators - So remember….

Never judge someone
By the way he looks
Or a book by the way it is covered
For inside those tattered pages
There’s a lot to be discovered.
