Clash Racing Sport

For String Quartet

Composer: Markus Smith

Preface

and all down glissandos in this piece: to play like how a car ‘neow’s
past you, or when you as the driver takes your foot off the accelerator, the engine’s
sound pitch falls.
: In racing culture, there is an overhead pole with
five lights that turn on one after the other until the
timer runs out and the lights turn off. Once the
lights go out, the race begins.
Play this as if you are the driver getting yourself
into focus for those lights to go out, so you mute
out any outside sound, such as your engine roaring
behind you.
In some performances, it is recommended to not
stick to strict timing while you wait for ‘lights out’
to happen. Instead, like real life, you and your
supporting players can coordinate to play earlier or
later. Just make sure you don’t do any kind of
upbeat to the note, or the audience will not be
surprised and react like the racers would. You are
the lights.

: This double stop asks you to play like the engine of a

Formula car, humming as it sits in neutral, ready to pounce.

You’ve got this, don’t let anyone tell you down.
