Employing the appropriate communicative styles

Lesson
for various situations

Communication is an essential tool that we cannot do away in our daily

lives. And the way we communicate with people varies depending on the
situation we are into. How you talk with your best friend is different when you
talk to your teacher and much different when you talk to a large number of
people.
The different communicative styles are vital tools in making friends and
building healthy social relationships.
Be acquainted more with the different communicative styles as you read
and answer the succeeding activities. Enjoy while you learn.

6
What’s In

Before we engage in another exciting learning journey, let us check the

knowledge that you’ve got from the previous lesson.
A conditional clause begins with “if” and says what “must happen” or
exist in order for the information in the main part of the sentence to be true.
Directions: To test if you understood the previous lesson, try the following
review exercises. Write the correct verb in the parentheses to complete each
sentence.
1. (Third conditional) If the students __________________ (not be) late
for the exam, they __________________ (pass).
2. (Second conditional) If she __________________ (have) her laptop
with her, she __________________ (email) me.
3. (First conditional) If the teacher __________________ (give) us lots
of homework this weekend, I __________________ (not be) happy
4. (Second conditional) If you __________________ (not be) so
stubborn, we __________________ (not have) so many arguments!
5. (Third conditional) If we __________________ (not have) an
argument, we __________________ (not be) late.
6. (Second conditional) If you __________________ (arrive) early, it
__________________ (be) less stressful.
7. (Second conditional) If Julie __________________ (like) chocolate, I
__________________ (give) her some.
8. (First conditional) If they __________________ (not / arrive) soon,
we __________________ (be) late.
9. (Third conditional) If she __________________ (study) Mandarin,
she __________________ (go) to Beijing.
10. (First conditional) If Lucy __________________ (not quit) her job
soon, she __________________ (go) crazy.

What’s New

There are five common communicative styles that we use in our everyday
lives. Those are intimate, casual, formal, conversational and frozen.
1. Intimate – this communicative style takes place between people who
are very close to each other. It is used with nonverbal communications
including gestures, facial expressions, eye contact and others. Compared to
other styles, it is characterized as free and easy for both conversant.
Intimate style can happen between lovers, bestfriends or family members.

2. Casual – this style is characterized as free and easy and can happen
between friends. It uses general language and is not prepared ahead of time.
One good example of a casual conversation is when someone wants to know a
person in a more personal level. It could be a phone message, or conversation
with friends and family members.

8
3. Consultative – this is known as the third level of language where a
listener participation is required after a speaker supplies background
information. A good example of consultative style is when a student asks
his/her teacher.

4. Formal – As a communicative style, formal requires a certain level of

formality in terms of the choice of words. It established with professional
rules like when there is a job interview or meeting. Thus, this style is more
often used in writing than in conversations. Slang words are a big no no.

5. Frozen – this is the most formal communicative style since it requires

language particular only to a certain group of people or party. Commonly, it
happens during respectful situations or formal ceremonies like weddings and
when reciting the pledge of allegiance. Often, this does not require a response
from the other party.

❖ Summing it up, these communicative styles are intended for people to
evaluate every conversation according to the people they talk with, the
situation or the place it is taking place. And when it is followed, the
proper use of each communicative style can hinder misunderstanding
and conflicts between two people or agreed parties.

What Is It

Let us go over the following dialogues. Try to analyze each of them.

Dialogue A

Dr. Rodriguez: Are you feeling any other problems, Rose?

Rose: Oh, I sometimes get dizzy, and I experience this ringing in my ears.

Dr. Rodriguez: I see. Have you been feeling nauseated and having
uncontrollable eye movements, too?

Rose: Yes, I have actually.

Dr. Rodriguez: Have you been taking any medications?

Rose: No, I haven’t.

Dr. Rodriguez: Well, I think you have vertigo. But, I still need to perform
some tests. Please wait here.

Rose: Okay. Thank you, doctor.

Dialogue B

Secretary: President Edward Cohen, may I present to you the Honorable

Carmina Suarez, the Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States.

Ambassador: It is a great honor to meet you, Your Excellency.

President Cohen: The honor is all mine.

10
Dialogue C

Mark: Dude! Are you guys free on Friday night?

Lennon: What d’ya have in mind?

Mark: How about goin’ to the amusement park?

Ryan: Yeah! That’d be awesome! I’m in!

Lennon: I’d want to . . . but my parents . . .

Mark: Dude, c’mon! You’re what, 18 now?! Just tell them you’re with me.

Lennon: OK. I’ll try . . . But no promises, OK?

Mark: Fine, bro. Just lemme know. Gotta go!

What’s More

Activity 1: What’s the Most Appropriate Style?

Directions: Identify the most appropriate communicative style for each
situation in the table. Write your answer on the next column.

Situations Communicative Styles

1. An employee has been reminded several times to

observe punctuality but continues to be late.
Worse, he seems unaffected by his tardiness and
openly remarks that many are also late anyway.
What is the most appropriate style should the
manager use in talking to this employee?

2. Liza and Joanna were former high school

classmates whom met in a bookstore by chance.
They briefly exchanged pleasantries and
expressed to get in touch. What communicative
style is most evident here?

3. The teacher observed that the class seems very

frustrated about their first quarter grade in a
certain subject. In their frustration, they say it
was the end of the line for them. They will
eventually fail the subject. The teacher knows
that her students just need a little push and
some inspiration. Which style should she
employ?

4. The reporter wants to feature the residents of

Barangay Mapayapa who are known for their
resilience and simplicity. He arranges for a short
interview with some of them. What is the most
appropriate style should this reporter use in this
situation?

12
5. The tricycle drivers of Barangay San Isidro are
planning to have a strike next week. They claim
that the Barangay Council members are not
doing anything on their request for a higher fare.
The commuters, on the other hand, are
protesting against the drivers’ request for a fare
increase. What style should the Barangay
Captain most appropriately use so that he can
get both the drivers and the commuters
harmoniously?

Activity 2: How should you do it?

Directions: Read and analyze the situations below. Identify the most
appropriate communicative style to be used and create a corresponding
dialogue to it. Write your answers inside the box.

Example: Marga was in the aisle of the supermarket when she saw her
childhood friend, Elise. What type of speech style will she use? Create your
own dialogue.

Answer: CASUAL
Marga: Hi, Elise! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you.
Elise: It was nice seeing you Marga. The last time we’ve
gettogether was during the reunion, right?
Elise: Yeah. Let’s have a group date with our friends next
Sunday.
Marga: Sure! I’ll chat our friends in the Messenger.
Elise: Okay, See you on Sunday. Bye.

Situation No. 1
You and your close friend fight because he/she was jealous of your other
friends. How will you portray this scene?

13
Situation No. 2
You are having dinner with your family. Your mom asks your performance in
school. How will you respond?

Situation No. 3
Your restaurant was declared bankrupt due to low sales because of the
Covid-19 pandemic. How are you going to tell it to your business partners?

What I Have Learned

We choose the appropriate communicative styles when we interact with

others. We choose our words carefully according to whom we are talking to.
The different communicative/speech styles are:
• intimate speech style
It is used by people who share very close relationship. This style is
reserved.

14
• casual speech style
It is used in relaxed or informal conversations between or among
friends, peers, colleagues, or family who share a common knowledge
or interest.
• consultative speech style
It is the most operational since it is designed to achieve an outcome
or result. It is used in semi-formal situations where a speaker needs
to provide background information because the listener (or
addressee) may not be able to understand without it.
• formal speech style
It is used in formal situations where there is only one-way
communication. What distinguishes this style from the consultative
style is the lack of listener participation.
• frozen speech style
It is a language style that does not change. Prayers and pledges, "set"
speech which is often scripted are examples of this speech style.

What I Can Do

This portion of the module is an enabler of the insights you gained from the
previous discussions. Believe that you can do a lot of challenges because this
activity will bring forth the best in you.
Let us proceed…

Activity 3: A. Determine the Speech Context. You can choose your answers
from the given pool of choices. If it is interpersonal, what type is it? Write
your answer on the provided space before the number.

Intrapersonal Interpersonal
*Dyad Communication
*Small Group
*Public
*Mass Communication

Wow! It was quite difficult but you did well.

Are you now ready for set C? While doing the task you can take a break. Make
sure to be back after five minutes. Altogether, let us engage.

What I Can Do On My Own

You have successfully performed Activity 3. You are now pretty sure to
independently face the next challenge.
This will deepen your knowledge and, in the end, firm-up your knowhow
in analyzing speech context.

Welcome to Activity 4!

How far can you make it? The answer depends on you. This is just like
playing COCs, Rules of Survival, ML etc. We shall now start the battle.

A. THE ENIGMATIC SELF

We are often mysterious to others. This game promotes self-awareness

about what we find mysterious about ourselves. In this activity, you write down
three things about yourself that no one else knows. You and other members of
the family shall be participative; each reads the mysterious aspects to each
other. Each collects the mysteries. At a later time, you read the facts list and
the remainder of the participants tries to guess who the facts are from on the
list. Encourage deep respect for these mysteries. Celebrate the uniqueness of
each other.
A family with solid trust is often built on awareness and appreciation of
each other.

17
Answers may vary.
Upon submission, the learner must attach the papers for the teacher to
weigh the points earned. This activity is good for ten points.

B. BLINDFOLD GAME
Create an obstacle course with everyday items at home. You will be sorted
into dyads, (any member of the family who wishes to help in this task). One
person is blindfolded while the rest of the group decides how to communicate
(from your seats) instructions on how to navigate through the course wearing a
blindfold. Each will be timed and discussion which communication style was
the most effective will follow immediately.
This activity builds your trust and requires accurate communication to
successfully navigate through the course. One person will stand near the
blindfolded participant to help him/her stay safe during the navigation.
You should record instructions used and attach copy.

C. DRAWN UNDERSTANDING
Choose a partner and sit back-to-back. One must hold an object and the
other must have a colored pencil and paper. The one with the object must
describe it in as much detail as possible, without directly saying what it is.
The other partner must draw the object as best as he can, based on the
communication of the other player with the object.

Did you find the activities fun and educational? That is the essence of
collaborative learning my dear and you did utilize your skills on
communication: the speech context, speech style and speech act.

JOB WELL DONE!

You are now well-prepared for the last part which would gauge how
far you learned from the tasks prior to this.
This is the final stage. Are you ready?
Trust yourself and be alive, alert, awake and enthusiastic.

18
What I Can Do More

DYADS
ACTIVITY 5 A. Find a partner. Ask how he/she would feel in the following
situations. Apply your gained insights on communicative strategies.

to the hospital. He drove carefully and upon reaching the curve, he
stopped, alighted from the car and went straight to the emergency room
to ask for help and immediately went back to the car. When he went
back to the car, he found her wife dead and there was a stranger in the
car.
