Fall Arrest/Protection/Rescue
Plan

for

FUSION HOUSE
1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this procedure is to prevent an accident form happening and to rescue a person if
he sould fall form unprotected height.

This rescue should take place within 5 mins form the accident occurring to prevent the person
going into Suspension Trauma.

Full body harnesses are classified as Personal Protective Equipment and PPE should only be
used when all other means of safeguarding the employees have been addressed and no other
option is available but to use PPE.

Procedure in case of an emergency:

• Supervisor to contact EMERGENCY SERVICES via phone

• Supervisor to implement the rescue plan

• Supervisor to secure area by means of barricading and contact Management

2. RESCUE PROCEDURE CONSCIOUS PATIENT

a) In the event of an accident occurring and where the person is not injured or unconscious,
such person should immediately get himself onto a solid platform where he can stand
(without undoing the lanyards) and wait for someone to bring a ladder.
b) If there are safe means of climbing down in the case of Scaffolding the person should climb
down and report the accident immediately to the Project Safety Officer. The person must go
for medical treatment / check-up.

3. RESCUE PROCEDURE UNCONSCIOUS PATIENT

a) In the event of an accident occurring and where the person is unconscious or injured, such
person should be attended to immediately.
b) Backup in the sense of the local Fire Department should be called immediately.
c) If the person is hanging from scaffolding a platform should be built at the area where the
person is hanging and he must be pulled towards the scaffold and placed with his back on
scaffold planks with other employees assisting the person.
d) Only when the person is safely on the scaffold platform should his lanyards be unhooked.
e) Immediate medical attention should be rendered and if the person is not breathing and no
pulse can be detected, then CPR must be started and the rescue party must then wait for a
professional local team to lower the person further down to the ground.
f) The local authorities have specialized equipment where they can lower the person down
without jeopardizing his safety or aggravating his injuries.

Suspension trauma is harness induced death caused by blood circulation that is cut off and lack of
muscle movement that will cause a lock of oxygen on cellular level.
Suspension trauma is a very serious emergency that will cause death or organ failure if not treated
correctly.

This should be communicated to all employees and it should be displayed in all relevant working
areas and notice boards.
