THE NECKLACE

The story of Guy De Maupassant entitled The Necklace is about Matilda and her husband.
It tells about the misfortune that happens to the married couple after attending a party. The
story tells the big changes in Matilda’s life just after losing a borrowed necklace from her friend.
Matilda and his husband is just living a simple life, not luxurious but not poor. However,
Matilda was never happy about the way they live, she always thinks that she was born to be rich
and she was born for all luxuries in the worlds. One day , her husband received an invitation for
a party that made him think that it will make Matilda happy. However, Matilday is not near of
being happy after hearing the news of them being invited in a party, she’s rather upset thinking
she have nothing suitable to wear for the party. Hearing the reason of Matilda’s complain, her
husband agreed to give her some money to buy a gown for the party. The party was fast
approaching that made Matilda anxious, telling her husband that she no jewelry to match with
her gown. Her husband suggested that maybe she can borrow some jewelry from her friend
named Jeanne Forestier. Jeanne generously opened her box of jewel and let Matilda borrow a
sparkling diamond necklace. When the day of the party came, Matilda is very satisfied of her
looks, Matilda is very elegant and graceful that some people want to be introduced to her. She
was very satisfied of her look that she became careless. After the party, the married couple
arrived in their home and Matilda realizes that the necklace is missing. The couple panicked and
started finding the missing necklace, they even report it to the police and offered a large
amount for someone who can find the necklace. Afraid to let Jeanne know, Matilda sent a letter
to Jeanne and used an excuse. After some time, they found a very similar kind of necklace that
cost thirty six thousand. The money of Matilda’s husband have is not enough to buy the
necklace that they have to borrow the remaining from the moneylenders. The married couple
bought the necklace and give it back to Jeanne who don’t have any care to check it. The married
couple moved to a smaller and Matilda and her husband had to work for years to finally pay all
the money they borrowed. One day, Matilda finally have the courage to tell Jeanne the truth
about the necklace and how much they bought it. Jeanne is shocked and tell Matilda that the
necklace is fake and was bought for smaller amount, Jeanne bought for only five hundred.
People who insist upon the things that they can’t afford can make them miserable. Not
everyone is granted to have a luxurious life. People need to be contended of the things they
have and do not ask for things that they can’t afford. Aside from that, if you made a mistake,
better to confess about it not minding the possible result of it. Everything you’ll do,
consequences will also come thru.
