Subject: Diagnostic system changes for 1982–83 Camry with 2S-E engine
Symptom: Inability to retrieve trouble codes
Source: Toyota service bulletin Volume 7, Engine 010 (May 1983)
The combination meter circuit was revised on vehicles starting with frame number
JT2SV11L*D0011775, manufactured since February 1983.
This modification does not affect operation of the CHECK ENGINE light if a problem develops
in the EFI system, but it does change the method of retrieving stored codes.

z To read the codes on vehicles before the production modification:

1. Make sure battery voltage exceeds 11 volts.
2. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.
3. Make sure the transmission is in neutral, all accessory switches are off, and the throttle
valve is fully closed.
4. Remove the 7.5-ampere fuse from the CHG cavity of the engine compartment fuse box.
5. Turn the ignition switch on, but do not start the engine.
6. Short terminals T and E1 of the check engine connector with a jumper wire.
7. Read the number of CHECK ENGINE light flashes and use the scanner manual code
entry to obtain code definitions. Refer to Toyota service procedures for additional
troubleshooting information.

z To read the codes on vehicles with the production modification:

• Follow the procedure above, but omit step 4.
Figure TA006-1 is a diagram of the combination meter circuit, showing the modification.
