TA007 Toyota and Lexus Reference

Subject: Electronic control unit (ECU) modification for 1986–89 Celica GT-S with the
3S-GE engine
Symptom: Hesitation and poor acceleration with cold engine
Source: Toyota service bulletin Volume 10, Engine 007, Revised (January 1990)
A revised ECU is available to correct cold engine driveability problems.

z To determine if the ECU is the cause or a contributing factor:

1. Make sure that all
engine mechanical,
fuel, and electrical and
electronic systems
perform within
specifications.
2. Remove the ECU from
its position beneath
the center of the
instrument panel
(behind the console,
Figure TA007-1) and
check its part number.
3. If the ECU part
number matches the Figure TA007-1 ECU location
“original part number”
as shown below, replace the ECU with a unit carrying the “remanufactured part number”
shown.

Table TA007-1
YEAR MODEL ORIGINAL PART REMANUFACTURED PART
1986 Celica GT-S 89661-20160 89661-20111-84
1987 Celica GT-S 89661-20110 89661-20111-84
1988–89 Celica GT-S 89661-20320 89661-20321-84

4. If necessary to replace the ECU, it is recommended that a fuel injector cleaner (such as
one large bottle of Techron™, or equivalent) be added to the fuel tank before driving.
Toyota technicians report good results with this repair

NOTE:
i Verify that the replacement part numbers have not been superseded before ordering an ECU.
The replacement ECU is a remanufactured unit, and a usable core is required for credit. Do
not remove the cover screws or otherwise tamper with the ECU core. Cores that are wet or
dirty will be rejected.
