Subject: Readiness monitor drive patterns for OBD-II vehicles

Symptom: Unable to complete emissions test
Source: Toyota Technical Service Information Bulletin EG003-02 (March 2002);
Lexus Technical Service Information Bulletin EG002-02 (February 2002)
An OBD-II system runs separate readiness monitor programs to check the performance of
different emissions-related components. If any of the readiness monitors has not been
successfully completed, emissions testing may be prevented.
Check the readiness monitor status with the scan tool before attempting to perform an
emissions test. Perform the required drive pattern for any monitors that display incomplete. A
readiness monitor resets to incomplete under the following conditions:
• ECM/PCM power is lost (battery disconnect or blown fuse).
• DTCs are cleared from ECM/PCM memory.
• Conditions for running the monitor have not been met.
Use the application tables to determine which drive pattern to use to clear a specific monitor.
Toyota models are listed in Table TA000-1 below, Lexus models are listed in Table TA000-2
on page AA12. Drive patterns are presented in numerical order after the application tables..

complete after completing the drive pattern the first time. Repeat the procedure.

Drive Pattern 3, Catalyst Monitor (O2S)

This drive pattern is used to reset the catalyst monitor on models with a front oxygen sensor
(O2S). Do not use for models that have an air-fuel ratio (A/F) sensor. The driving pattern is
shown in Figure TA000-3.

Figure TA000-3 Drive Pattern 3

Preconditions
The following preconditions must be met for the monitor to run:
• MIL off
• ECT is at least 176°F (80°C)
• IAT is at least 14°F (–10°C).

TA16
TA000 Toyota and Lexus Reference

NOTE:
i On 2002 and later models, repeat the drive pattern a second time after cycling the ignition off
when ambient temperature is below 14°F (–10°C).

Procedure
With the scan tool connected to the vehicle DLC, check monitor status and preconditions as
follows.

z To check the monitor status and preconditions:

1. Drive the vehicle at speeds between 40 and 55 mph (64 and 88 kph) for the time indicated
below as based on IAT at engine startup:
a. 7 minutes if IAT was below 50°F (10°C) at startup.
b. 3 minutes if IAT was above 50°F (10°C) at startup.
2. Drive the vehicle at speeds between 35 and 45 mph (56 and 72 kph) for about 7 minutes.

NOTE:
i Drive with smooth throttle operation, avoid sudden acceleration, avoid sudden deceleration.

If readiness does not switch to complete, verify preconditions are met, switch the ignition off,
then repeat the procedure.

NOTE:
i If a pending code has set (first trip of a 2-trip DTC), the readiness status may not switch to
complete after completing the drive pattern the first time. Repeat the procedure.

Drive Pattern 4, Catalyst Monitor (A/F Sensor)

This drive pattern is used to reset the catalyst monitor on models an A/F sensor. Do not use
this procedure for models with an O2S. The driving pattern is shown in Figure TA000-4.

Figure TA000-4 Drive Pattern 4

TA17
TA000 Toyota and Lexus Reference

Preconditions
The following preconditions must be met for the monitor to run:
• MIL off
• ECT is at least 176°F (80°C)
• IAT is at least 14°F (–10°C).

NOTE:
i On 2002 and later models, repeat the drive pattern a second time after cycling the ignition off
when ambient temperature is below 14°F (–10°C).

Procedure
With the scan tool connected to the vehicle DLC, check monitor status and preconditions as
follows:

Cold Soak Procedure

z To perform a cold soak:

1. Start and run the engine (at idle or driving) until ETC is 176°F (80°C) or greater.
2. Allow the vehicle to cold soak for 8 hours, or until the difference between the ECT and IAT
readings is less than 13°F (7°C).

Drive Pattern Procedure

Connect the scan tool to the vehicle and check monitor status and preconditions as follows.

z To check monitor status and preconditions:

1. Release fuel tank pressure by removing then reinstalling the fuel filler cap.
2. Start the engine and run at idle until ECT is at least 167°F (75°C).
3. Raise engine speed to 3000 rpm for about 10 seconds.
4. Switch the A/C on to create a slight load and allow the engine to idle for 15 to 50 minutes.

NOTE:
i To create a slight load on models without A/C, securely set the parking brake, block the drive
wheels, place the transmission in drive, and allow the engine to idle for 15 to 50 minutes.

If readiness does not switch to complete after 50 minutes of idling, verify preconditions are
met, switch the ignition off, then repeat the cold soak and drive pattern procedures.

NOTE:
i If a pending code has set (first trip of a 2-trip DTC), the readiness status may not switch to
complete after completing the drive pattern the first time. Repeat the procedure.
