Reaction Paper

As a beginner at reading novels, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, written by Taylor
Jenkins Reid, is the book that stuck with me the most. This book was published on June 13,
2017, in Thorndike, Maine. The book is about the life of the Hollywood star, Evelyn Hugo. She
had a very controversial life, which included her marriage to seven different husbands. Evelyn
reached out to a particular journalist named Monique Grant to write her book and uncover the
truth about her life. This paper covers my thoughts and reactions to the book and it will also
serve as a book review.

The story has a unique approach, especially with its dual timeline, which involves a past
and present timetable. It switches back and forth from Evelyn’s past to the present, where she is
narrating her experiences in life. The author did well in relating it to some relevant issues these
days. Being open to the LGBTQ+ community played a big part in the novel. The way the
characters managed every coming-out situation was handled with no judgment and acceptance.
Some serious problems that many are experiencing, like poverty, harassment, and domestic
violence, were also mentioned. This leads us to one of our negative points: trigger warnings.
There were certain parts where she explained every struggle she went through for each husband.
What struck me the most was when she got abused by someone whom she thought would be the
love of her life. It contains a lot of triggering content for readers. It jumps from one traumatizing
event to another. Another negative point is Monique Grant’s storyline. Her storyline is vague and
dull for someone who will be writing about one of the most well-known Hollywood actors in the
world. I was not satisfied with her story’s turn of events, for it seems incomplete. Nevertheless, it
is understandable since she is not the main subject of the story. The most exciting thing about the
book is the life of a star. I am so amazed at how she handles herself with elegance in front of
many people, regardless of what she has gone through. Evelyn’s life is controversial, yet she
faced everything with a brave face and surrounded herself with a good support system. The
highlight of the story is the chemistry of the relationships between the characters. Evelyn, Celia,
Harry, and John have a real bond, and the special connection between them is evident. They
found solace in each other, making their friendship so pure and genuine.
This book is currently one of my favorite books I read. The author did well in writing this
story and inspiring others just like it inspired me to stand up for myself and chase my dreams
with my head held high. Even though there are crucial parts that I disagree with, the plot itself
makes up for it. This book left me confused for days as I tried to sink it all in. With all its twists
and turns, it might not allow you to get up from your seat once you start reading it. That is why I
would recommend this book to someone who likes novels because it will leave you on the edge
of your seat just like what it did to me.
