Quadratic Equation

A pond is filled up with 60000000 cm3 of water. There are two pumps, 𝐴 and
𝐵 which can be used to drain the pond. Pump 𝐴 can drain the water at
a rate of 𝑥 m3 per minute, while Pump 𝐵 can drain the water
at a rate of (𝑥 + 0.3) m3 per minute.
Concept:

(i) Write down the time taken, in minutes, for Pump 𝐴 to drain out all the water
from the pond completely.
(ii) Write down the time taken, in minutes, for Pump 𝐵 to drain out all the water 1. Check Units
from the pond completely. 2. Big – Small = Difference
(a) Given that Pump 𝐴 takes 3 minutes and 20 seconds more than Pump 𝐵, form
an equation in 𝑥 and show that it reduces to 10𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 54 = 0.
(b) Solve the equation, 10𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 54 = 0 and hence write down the time
taken in minutes for Pump 𝐴 to drain out all the water from the pond
completely.
(c) If both pumps are turned together, will the pumps be able to drain out all the
water completely within 12 minutes? Explain your answer.

(a) Volume of gift box = 201 𝑐𝑚3 (3 𝑠. 𝑓)

Kate is designing open cylindrical gift boxes with base radius x cm.
Volume of gift box
She uses rectangular pieces of cardboard of length 20 cm and a variable width.
=𝜋 2 2 20 − 4
= 201 𝑐𝑚3 (3 𝑠. 𝑓)

(b) Shown
Volume of gift box = 𝜋 𝑥 2 20 − 2𝑥
= 2𝜋𝑥 2 10 − 𝑥
(c) Because Volume of gift box > 0, thus 𝑥 > 0 and 10 − 𝑥 > 0.
Thus, 0 < 𝑥 < 10.
She cuts the net of the gift boxes out from each piece of cardboard.
By changing the base radius of the cylinders, she can change the volume of the gift
boxes. Plot 𝑉 = 2𝜋𝑥 2 10 − 𝑥 , 𝑓𝑜𝑟 0 < 𝑥 < 10
(a) Work out the volume of a gift box of base radius 2 cm.
(b) Show, in terms of x, the volume of the gift boxes she makes is given by When 𝑉 = 600 𝑐𝑚3 , 𝑥 = 4 𝑜𝑟 8.
2𝜋𝑥 2 10 − 𝑥 .
To obtain the maximum number of gift boxes, area to be painted should be as small as
(c) Explain why 0 < 𝑥 < 10. possible.
(d) Kate paints the external curved surface area of the gift boxes with acrylic paint.
Curved surface area = 2𝜋 20𝑥 − 2𝑥 2
With one bottle of acrylic paint, Kate can paint up to 0.6 𝑚2 of cardboard.
At the same time, she wants the volume of the each gift box to be at least Sub 𝑥 = 8.7, curved surface area = 142.13𝑐𝑚2.
600𝑐𝑚3. 0.6×100×100
Number of gift boxes= = 42.215
142.13

By drawing a suitable graph, work out the maximum number of gift boxes she Hence, the maximum number she can paint is 42.
