WEEK 1

TOPIC: COMPUTER SOFTWARE

OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON:

Students should be able to:

1. define software;
2. state the types of software;
3. give examples of each type of computer software.

OUTLINE:

1. Definition of Software
2. Types and Examples of software:

What is a software?

Remind them what a computer is-

A software is a set of instructions and procedures passed to the computer to
perform certain activities or tasks. Software acts as a communication link
between the user and the computer. Though software are letters that can be
seen, it can’t be handled like a hardware. Software’s can be stored in devices
such as; floppy disk, CD/DVD-ROM, and the fixed disk in a computer called
hard disk
State how software are related to computers-
Types and Example of Software

There are two main types of software

 System Software (operating system): This is a set of instructions
in the form of programs, languages and documentation, which enables
the programmer to develop and run application programs. System
software acts as an interface between the user’s programs and the
computer components, which helps in the smooth execution of the
programs.
It helps to properly control the performance of the computer system.
System software can be classified into the following:
- Bootstrap Loader: This is a program that loads other programs and
imports parts of the operating systems into the main memory.
- Operating System: This is a set of programs that manages
computer resources. It is a set of routines and procedures that govern
the operation of a computer. This system also controls the flow of
signals from CPU to various parts of computer. It is the first program
loaded into the computer memory after the computer is switched on.
This process is called booting. No computer will function without the
operating system which is referred to as OS
- Utility program: This is also known as service program. It is a
common tool for file computer management. Examples include; text
editor, debugging tool, file manager and peripheral interchange
program.
- Translator- This is a software package that translates programs
written by users into machine language.
- Executive- this is a master program that is permanently held in the
internal storage of the computer. It is only loaded prior to the
commencement of processing which performs tasks of a supervisory
nature.
- Assemblers:
- I/O systems:
State the feature of all this types of software
 Application software (Word processing, spreadsheet, graphics etc.): This
kind of software is tailored for a particular kind of task. It cannot run
on itself but is dependent on a system software to execute. They are
user written programs.(Meaning
There are two major classifications of application programs, namely:
1. Classification based on users’ objectives.
2. Classification based on method of acquisition.
 Other types of software-Internet applications and utility software
State the differences of and similarities of all this software
WEEK 2
