Shut-off Valves

Summary statement

This summary will shed light on the fundamental aspects of the valve’s
functionality, components, and materials.

A shut-off Valve plays an important role in the process within the paper industry,
but its use it’s much wider.

So I can respond to the different questions required by Celpap, I’ll structure it in

the following points:

1. What use and applications does it have?

2. Stainless steel

3. Valve’s construction

4. Operating elements

5. Flange bores

6. Compact Valve Handwheel

7. Pneumatic Cylinder and protection Guard

8. Electric drive/Bevel Gear Box/ Sprocket Drive

9. Conclusion
1-What use does it have?

The paper industry, as well as every industry, requires a wide range of

machinery. One of the main key machines in this process is the shut-off valve.

The valve’s main role would be:

● The regulation and control of liquid flow within a pipe

This is fundamental as in the paper industry, various fluids are handled

throughout the whole process. This includes all types of aggressive media
(quemichals, steam, air, water, materials) and also reducing stock holding.

● Leak Prevention

It’s important to be efficient and prevent waste. A valve has the ability to
seal and protect the machinery used in paper production.

● Shut-off: Stop the flow it’s needed. Allows to do repairs, maintenance,

replaces without affecting the process

● Optimisation

Having control of the flow, helps maintain paper quality and performance.

● Temperature and Pressure Resistance

It’s key to have the best components as it makes the process as smother,
reliable, and safe as possible (following always the different safety rules applied
by every government/organization)

We are focusing this Summary on the paper industry, but to be more specific, I’ll
point out the different applications of a valve:

● Paper industry/Chemical industry: Reliability in aggressive media

● Industrial sewage treatment: The need to use expensive isolation
appliances to guard against contact corrosion is removed
● Food industry: Viscous and glutinous media ( Salt work, sugar mills)
● Biogas industry: Tolerant against impurities, high/low- Viscosity, liquid,
vegetables, etc
● Special valves if required, can be supplied

2-Stainless steel

Housing entirely of Stainless steel.Preferred material due to the following

reasons:

● Corrosion- Acid resistance

● Temperature resistance
● Lighter
● Durability and easy to maintain
● Water pressure vibration and resistance

As for the previous reasons, we can consider that using stainless steel is ideal for
paper production.
3-Valve’s construction

It’s important to know the different components/materials needed to build them

and their specific uses.

Since there are many processes in the paper industry, it’ key to be:

● 100% water tight : Firmly sealed and anchored, easy to replace while being
safe ( even with temperatures and acids)
● Slight guides of special plastic to resist agressive media, temperatures and
also having anti-friction properties
● Nominal Diameter of Piping
● Actuating elements in well-proved Lohse-Modular System. This allows to
reduce stock holding and also supplying interchangeable elements on the
incorporated valves or our make.

Components
● Valve plate( Stainless steel): Part of the internal structure, it controls the
fluid flow and can determine how should it be flowing. It also prevent
depositing stock

● Stuffing box/Press gland( Stainless steel/ Pressured polyethylene):

Compresses the sealing materials ( Prevents leaks)

● Packing assembly (EPDM =Synthteic rubber): A seal around the valve to

prevent licking

● Housing Plate (DN): Key purpose of corrosion resistance and chemical

resistance

● EPDM Ring: Sealing properties. It helps the valves properly function

● EPDM Sealing gasket: Similar to the ring

● SlideCup (DN): Guides the movement

● Special gasket: Sealing and preventing lickings

Materials
At Celpap we provide different materials for each of the components mentioned
above.
4-Operating Elements

An operating element refers to a mechanism responsible for opening and closing

the valve. These operating elements allow us to provide versatility and easy
maintenance to our clients

All LOHSE COMPACT-Valves comprise the following main groups:

● Body Type: CNA

● Operating elements: Hns, H, P, PV, E, GK, K, X

● Sizes and Measures: DN, K, T, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, Tr D x H LH,ØJ, cyl

Ø, Weight

If a client has a CNA Body Type, we can offer flexibility in adapting to specific
needs and replacing components ( Safety rules must be observed, pipes must be
pressureless)
*Connection of brackets: used to attach or secure the valve to a mounting
surface. Provides structural support and ensures a proper alignment

*Actuator coupling: The actuator coupling is a mechanism that connects the

valve actuator to the valve itself. The actuator is the component responsible for
opening, closing, or modulating the valve based on external signals or control
systems.

Operating elements advantages

● It’s cost-effective since it simplifies the holding of spare parts

● Reduces maintenance cost as actuating elements can be replaced

inexpensively

● Easy and quick replacement

Protection Guards (According to machinery directive G)

These guards are necessary to shield all moving parts ( Stainless steel)

5-Flange Bores

*A flange bore connects the Valve to the piping system safely. It also simplifies
the installation, removal of valves, repairs, and replacements.
It’s important to mention that the flange bores have a key role in preventing
leaking
The number of holes is measured by:

● Z: Number of holes
● Z1:Number of joint holes
● Z2:Number of through-going bores
● T: Usable depth of thread

6-Compact Valve Handwheel

The handwheel is manually operated and its main purpose it’s to turn and control
the valve.
It’s key to know the exact dimensions and weight so we can supply the right size

● Handwheel drive with non-rising stem

*The stem does not move up or down as the valve is opened or closed.
Instead, the handwheel and the stem rotate together

● Handwheel drive with rising stem:

*In a rising stem design, the valve stem moves up or down as the valve is
opened or closed. When the handwheel is turned to open the valve, the
stem rises, and when turned to close the valve, the stem descends.
7-Pneumatic Cylinder

*In summary, a pneumatic cylinder as an operating element in a valve provides

automation, remote control, fast response times, and precise positioning (
opening and closing the valve)

Apart from its dimensions and weight, when it comes to a pneumatic Cylinder, it’s
key to understand the air connection and control pressure ( it provides
automation by converting the energy from compressed air into mechanical
motion)

● Pneumatic Cylinder and variable stroke limiter

A stroke limiter is key for precision control and safety ( keeps a defined
range)

8- Electric drive/Bevel Gear Box/ Sprocket Drive

Refers to an electrically powered mechanism used to control the movement or

position of the valve.
