Q 1. Obtain the equation of motion of the system shown in Figure 1. Rigid rod AB has mass m and
mass moment of inertia IAB. Consider only vertical motion of the mass, M. Obtain natural frequencies
corresponding mode shapes (i.e., relative displacements) of the system for: l1 = 20 cm, l2 = 60 cm, M =
5 kg, m = 10 kg, IAB = 2 kg-m2, k1 = 2 kN/m and k2 = 1 kN/m. Obtain the decoupled EOMs (modal mass
and modal stiffness) using modal matrix for transformation to natural coordinates using orthogonality
properties of mode shapes (i.e. eigen vectors).

Q 2. Obtain equations of motion of the spring-disc system shown in Fig. 2 in terms of physical
parameters. Mention the number of degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) and relevant generalised
coordinates. The disks are under pure rolling condition.
Both the discs have mass 5 kg and a radius of 0.5 m. The value of k is 1 kN/m. Find the natural
frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the system.
