TBT-007 Personal Hygiene

Prepare: Quiet Location / No Distractions / Phones Off / 15 minutes Duration

Reason: In many ways the standard of personal hygiene will depend on the
attitude of the individual
Why: You must look after yourself and you should expect the site management
to give you adequate facilities
Outline the TBT: This TBT will cover the price that you may have to pay for poor standards
of personal hygiene and what you can do to prevent it.

What you should expect:

1. Enough toilets, wash basins, drying space and rest areas, the number will depend on
the number of people on site or in accommodation
2. All washing facilities must have hot and cold water, soap and some means to dry
yourself
3. The opportunity to use these facilities is necessary (you must have time)
4. The facilities should be clean and well maintained on a regular basis
5. Instructions must be provided on how to protect yourself from the effects of any
hazardous substances that you may use
6. If canteens/kitchen provides food it must be in a hygienic condition

Question: What should you do if you find that toilets are not being cleaned enough?

Answer: Report it to site supervisor or HR Administrative Officer if in accommodation

Your side of the deal:

1. Use toilets, wash basins and showers if provided as these are necessary to maintain a
high level of personal hygiene
2. Wash your hands after using the toilet and always before eating (use alcohol based
hand sanitizer where supplied)
3. Leave all toilets, wash basins, showers, drying areas and rest areas in a clean and
tidy condition for others to use
4. Avoid contamination of the skin by substances hazardous to health, e.g. cement;
comply with any instruction given
5. Do not leave or prepare your own food in unhygienic conditions
6. If you are unwell, see your doctor if necessary and stay away from work if instructed
to do so

Question: What is the correct course of action to take if you know the identity of someone
who vandalizes the toilets?

Answer: Report it to site supervisor or HR Administrative Officer if in accommodation

TBT-007 Personal Hygiene

If you (or someone else), gets it wrong:

1. Sickness and Diarrhea can be a result of poor personal hygiene

2. The transfer of harmful germs and bacteria from hand to mouth is the most common
route of entry in to the body
3. Failing to wash your hands after the toilet or handling material is the most common
cause of transfer
4. You can also transfer germs or bacteria from your hand to another surface, which
someone then touches and transfer to their mouth; someone else suffers because of
your poor hygiene and standards
5. Would you like to lose time off work (and money) because of someone else’s low
standards of personal hygiene?
6. Other stomach complaints may be caused by failure to clean work related substances
from your hands before eating
7. Being caught, or being reported for, urinating somewhere other than the toilets will
lead to a disciplinary action

Now ask the workforce if they have any questions for you regarding the TBT and
ask a few questions to them to ensure they have understood it

Question: Where would you find information on the health hazards of substances that you
use?
