Over the past few months, a total of 8 Vessels have encountered operational
challenges, which include instances of purifier choking, excessive wear of fuel pump,
fuel pump pressure drop issues, drop in Pmax and high exhaust gas temperatures while
using bunker fuels bunkered in New Orleans. All the fuels were 0.5% VLSFO (Very low
sulfur fuel oils).
Organic acids were detected by GC MS Acid analysis in all these eight fuels. The
presence of external acidic compounds are known to cause accelerated damage to
the fuel injection equipment of marine diesel engines.
The Initial sediment content of these fuels was within the specification limits (with
values between 0.03%m/m and 0.08%m/m). However, being VLSFO fuels, we have seen
sediment values increase with storage time. We have checked this with our long-term
stability test algorithm and observed a value of as much as 0.31% for a storage period of
60 days.
To safeguard the machinery and the vessel, we highly recommend utilizing the VLSFO
POMP (Peace of Mind Package). This comprehensive package includes Acid number,
pH, long term stability assessment as well as a GCMS screening test which can detect
the presence of at least 16 compounds. By proactively implementing this solution, you
can identify potential issues and take appropriate measures to prevent fuel pump
problems.
