Chapter 3: Forces and Movement

1 Calculate the force of the following.

a a mass of 75 kg accelerating at 10 m/s2 towards the ground

b a bullet of mass 250 g accelerating at 25 m/s2

c a cannonball of mass 6 kg decelerating at 150 m/s2

2 Calculate the acceleration of the following.

a an ice skater of mass 65 kg using a propulsive force from her legs of 90 N

b a brick of 1.5 kg thrown with a force of 2.5 N

c a car of mass 1000 N with a retarding force of 2250 N

3 An astronaut of mass 70 kg is preparing to go out into space. She steps into a simulator that
mimics the gravitational field on planets and stars in the Solar System. Using the gravitational
field strengths given, calculate the weight of the astronaut.

a on the Moon, 1.6 N/kg

b on the Sun, 274 N/kg

7 A transit van is carrying a load to the depot. The mass of the van including the load 3900 kg.
When the transit enters the motorway junction it increases its speed from 18 m/s to 25 m/s in a
time of 14 seconds.

b Calculate the force required to provide the acceleration of the van.

The driver provides a constant force on the engine through the foot pedal. Eventually the van
stops accelerating and reaches a constant speed.

c Explain why the van reaches a constant speed if the driver provides a constant driving force to
the van.
