The architect contributes to
the process of creation
through interpretation of the
problem. The user
contributes to the process by
provision of needs as well as
through the use of the
completed structure,
recognizing the aspects of
architectural design
that contribute to the
success of the solution.
Design elements are those which can be defined as specific parts of
a design solution which influence, direct or resolve the overall
composition of the design elements.

A conceptual element of architecture : contribute to

identification/making of place (not the physical material)
1. THE GROUND
Principally ground is
fundamental to the
identification of many
the medium that
architecture mould
into places. A fact to
which most products of
archhitecture relate.
2. RAISED AREA
a raised platform
creates a horizontal
surface lifted, lifted
above the natural
ground. it may be high
or low. may be large
(stage or terrace),
medium (table or altar)
or may be small (step or
shelf)
3. LOWERED AREA

a pit is formed by
excavation of the ground
surface. it creates a place
which is below the natural
level of the ground. it may
be a grave or even provide
space for a sub terranean
house or perhaps a
swimmingpool
4. MARKER
a marker identifies a
particular place in the
most basic way. it does so
by occupying the spot
and by occupying the
spot and by standing out
from the surroundings. it
may be a tombstone, a
church steeple or a
multistorey office block

5. FOCUS

Any element upon which

concentration is brought to
bear. Might be a fireplace, an
altar, athrone, a work of art
even a distant mountain

6. BARRIER
it divides one place from
another could be a wall,
a fence, a hedge, a dike
or just the psychological
barrier of a line on the
floor

7. ROOF CANOPY

it divides from the sky,

sheltering from sun and
rain. a roof also implies a
defined area of ground
beneath it. because of
gravity, a roof need
support (provided by
walls or columns)
Handerson Bridge, Singapore
8. SUPPORTING POST / COLUMS
it divides from the sky,
sheltering from sun and rain. a
roof also implies a defined area
of ground beneath it. because
of gravity, a roof need support
(provided by walls or columns)

suspension rod or cable, which

can support a platform or roof,
but which also depends
literally upon a structural
support above.
9. OPENING
Allow passage of light and
air. historically, a more
recent basic element is the
glass wall, which is a barrier
physically but not visually.

10. PATH
a place along which one moves,
which might be straight, or trace
an irregular route across the
ground surface avoiding
obstacles. a path might also be
inclined: as a ramp or a stair
Basic element such a these can be
combined to create rudimentary
architectural forms, sometimes
these combined elements have
names of the of their own.
