APPLICATION Direct measurement of curent in High Voltage System is not possible because o insulation problem of measuring instruments is also not possible to use current flowing through the system direct for protection purpose due to Its high value and high Insulation problem. BASIC FUNCTIONS OF CURRENT TRANSFORMERS ARE: 41. To reduce the line current toa value whichis suitable fr standard measuring Instruments, relays etc. 2. To Isolate the measuring instruments. It is advisable to specily minimum ‘equited Burden for metering core as unnecessary high burden wll necessitate for bulky and costlier design. Specified accuracy is Guaranteed for 100% to 25% of rated burden only. Current transformer offers minimum error if 75% to 60% burden is ‘connected to secondary. APPLICATION Direct measurement of voltage in High Voltage System is not possible because of insulation problem of measuring instruments. It i also not possible to use direct voltage forthe system protection purpose due to its high value and high insulation problem of protective relays. Therefore, voltage transformers are used to step- ‘down the high system votage to low standard value accurately in proportion to theirratio, BASIC FUNCTIONS OF VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS ARE: 1.70 reduce the tine voltage to a value which is sutable for standard measuring instruments, relays etc 2.7 isolate the measuring instruments, meters relays etc. from ‘igh votage sie ofan installation, To sense abnormalites in voltage and give voltage signals to protective relays to isolate the defective system. THEORY General principle of power transformer design also apply to the voltage transformors but there are cortain considerations of performance which are of patticular importance. In the ‘lectromagnetic voltage transformers, accuracy depends on leakage reactance and winding resistance. These determine how the phase error and voltage error vary as the burden on secondary Increases (Refer Fig.2) The permeabilty and power dissipation of core material affects the exciting current and thus the error at zer0 burden ‘To comply with the requirement of |S. 3186/IEC 60044-2, Flux density employed in voltage transformer is much less than the value ‘generally usedin power vansformer. The tum ratioand voltage drop ‘due to leakage reactance and the winding resistance must be corefully determined, in order that the permissible error is not exceeded, ‘Theory of voltage transformer can be established more clearly with the help ofphasor diagram as givenin FIG.1, Single phase Electromagnetic voltage transformer (EMV) is ‘manufactured two types (i) single pole (To connectbetween ines & earth) (i) Both pole (to connect between Line-to-Lne) 3 phase voltage transformers are of starlstar connected or star/open delta, connected (residual Voltage Transformer) type. It is Important to specify correct parameters of V.T. while corderingfor optimum desig. Following are main factors for selecting Voltage Transformer, 1. Service Volt ‘System Voltage in which V.T isto be installed e.g. 11k, 22ky, <3ky ete 2. Installation Whether OUTDOOR or INDOOR 3. Atmospheric Conditions ‘Such a5 condition of Pollution, Altitucse, Ambient Temperature etc 4, Insulation Level If insulation level other than associated with service voltage is required it shouldbe specifically mentioned, 5. Rated Primary Voltage Rated primary voltage is generally rated system voltage for Unearthed type VTS. and rated systom voltage divided by square root of three for earthed type V.TS. The Vis. can be manufactured suitable for more than one system voltage. In such cases, different primary voltages required may be indicated, 6. Rated Secondary Voltage Standard Values of Secondary voltages are 110v or 110vh'3 ‘depenaing on application of the secondary winding. VTS, wit different secondary voltages other than those mentioned above ‘can be manufactured.and supplies 7. Voltage Factor IITs, are manufactured suitable for continuous vltage factor (of 1.2. As per IS. | LE.C. Specifications, short time voltage factor is diferent for aiflrent earthing systems, Therefore ‘appropriate system aarthing conditions maybe specified. crsaprs '8. Number of secondary windings. Their burdens & accuracy classes [Number of secondary windings, their burdens and accuracy classes are selacted on the basis of application. Two types of classes are available, one for metering and other for protection. Unlike curent transformers, accuracy of one winding Is influenced by loading of other winding. Due to this reason burden of each winding should be correctly mentioned. ‘Accuracy of\.T. Is quaranteed at the secondary terminals of the VT. The impedance of cable connecting secondary terminal to load (Relay or Meter) offers series drop in output voltage. This ‘causes additional errors in secondary winding atthe measuring lend of cable and is proportional tothe load en the secondary. Therefore, itis advisable to select separate metering and protection winding Alternatively, single winding can be used for ‘metering and protection if separate cables are used for connections.
