Academic Writing Task Brief

WRITING TASK 2 (FORMATIVE)

For WRITING TASK 2, you will need to create your own task, and then write
between 1000 and 1400 words in response. Please select or create one title using
the separate ‘Essay Title Guidance’ document.

This writing task needs to include sources to support your points and must respond
to the task directly (focus on answering the exact question).

As you plan and write, consider the marking criteria and feedback from your other
tasks. Show that you can use relevant and reliable sources appropriately and
effectively and that you can express your ideas and content in an organised and
precise way.

The aim of WRITING TASKS 2 and 3 is to form one continuous writing exercise. All
Reading and Writing tasks will teach you skills which will help you produce this draft
WT2 and the final summative essay/report WT3.

WRITING TASK 2 can be completed with or without subheadings.

The essay/report you produce for WRITING TASK 2 will be rewritten as WRITING
TASK 3 – a summative task worth 100% of your final grade for Writing on this
module. See separate Writing Task 3 instructions for more details of submission
process and task requirements.

Please follow the precise advice on the next page carefully when formatting and

• Use the WT2 Researched Writing Task template for your essay,
which you will find under Assessments on Blackboard.
• put your student number in the header at the top of your essay (do
not put your name)
• put the full title (your question) in the ‘Specific Question’ box in
the table at the top of the template
• fill out the other parts of the table in the template using the latest
information from the same table in your Progress Log
• number your pages
• use font size 12 (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman or Lucida Sans)
• 1.5 or double space your text (do not use single spacing)
• put the word count at the end of the essay
• include in-text Harvard references and a reference list in Harvard
format

You will be given a percentage grade and feedback for Writing Task 2 following
moderation. This draft essay is formative, and therefore your grade will not be part of
your final grade for writing, but it may be used to review your progress on the course.

You are expected to select relevant, reliable and suitably academic sources to support
and develop your points. As this work is assessed, present your argument in a clear
and academic way, according to the Researched Writing Criteria (in the Assessments
folder on Blackboard). Your work should be logical and analytical.

Follow the Library referencing guides at http://library.soton.ac.uk/sash/referencing or

‘Cite Them Right’ online at Cite Them Right (oclc.org) when compiling your in-text
references and your reference list. Also, check that all your in-text references match
your reference list.

Before you submit your work, you should check your work for accuracy, style and clarity
of expression. You should also review the structure of your essay to ensure that
paragraphs are clear and your ideas are logical (coherent) and linked (cohesive). It is
important to check for typing and/or spelling mistakes.

All grades are provisional and are given for your information only. These grades will
be agreed and finalised at the Pre-sessional Exam Board in September.

See the separate ‘Essay Title Guidance’ document for guidance with selecting your
essay question.
