Assignment 1:

1. What is folkdance?

Folkdance is a type of traditional dance that translates a community's rituals, courtship


procedures, and their normal lives into a distinct and strange steps, and also accompanied by a
traditional ensembles.

 What are the common dance terms in folkdance?


• Abracete – It came from spanish term wherein a girsl stands on the right side of a
male, holds his left hand using her right hand, while her other hand is down.
• Arms in Lateral Position – A position of arms wherein both are pointing to either left
side or right side.
• Bilao – To move hands up alternately. While the other is on up, the other lies
perpendicular to waist.
• Cabeceras – It is the name of couples dancing in the center of the dance floor.
• Clockwise – Like the motion of the hands of the clock.
• Counterclockwise – The reverse direction of clockwise.
• Costados – A formation (square) of dancers occupying the sides of dancefloor
• Crossed arms – Partners are facing each other or standing side by side, girl at the right
of boy. They join their Left hands together and their Right hands together either Right
over Left or Left over Right hands.
• Do-Si-Do(“Dos-a-Dos”) – Partners walk toward each other, making their opposite hand
crossed and then move in circle.
• Draw – A step where the dancer moves the foot closer to the other who's bearing the
weight of the body.
• Free Foot – There is no weight placed on foot.
• Free Hand – The hand remains still.
• Hand on Waist – Hand on the back, just on the level of waist.
• Hapay – An act of offering a handkerchief or wine to a participant.
• Hayon –Hayon – To place one forearm in front and the other at the back of the waist.
This is a Visayan term.
• Hop – A spring from one foot landing on the same foot in place or any direction (in
front, in rear, sideward or across).
• Inside Foot – The foot nearest one’s partner, when partners stand side by side.
• Inside Hand – The hand nearest one’s partner, when partners stand side by side.
• Jump – A jump either using foot/feet, and landing on both.
• Leap – A jump using a foot and landing on the other foot.
• Outside Foot – The foot away one’s partner, when partners stand side by side.
• Outside Hand – The hand away from one’s partner, when partners stand side by side.
• Place – To put the sole of the foot on a desired position without placing weight on it.
• Point – Touch lightly with the toes of one foot, weight of the body on the other.
• Saludo –A way of paying respect through bowing to participants and audience.
• Sarok – A movement where the dancer crosses his feet, bend slightly and cross the
hand down in front with the right hand over the left
• Set – A dance formation like a quadrille or a unit composed of two or more pairs.
• Stamp – To make a noise using foot by forceably putting it down.
• Star with the Right Hand – it is when 4 or more people walk toward the center to
holding hands using right hand and then proceed to move in circle.
• Star with the left hand – same as “Star with the Right hand” only join Left hands and
counterclockwise.
• Step – to transfer the feet from place A to another.
• Tap – to place a weight on the tip of the toe and tap in lightly on the ground.

2. What are the classification of movements in dance?

The classification of movements in dance are:

1. Locomotor or a movement where in the body moves from one place to another (e.g. walking,
jumping, running, etc.)

2. Non-locomotor or a movement of the body that excludes the changes of location (e.g. bend,
stretch, swing, etc.)
