Observing bacteria in a

petri dish
Gr6B01 Science experiment – Bacterial growth

Mr Gareth – Cambridge advance program – Science

_________________________________________________________________________

Write a detailed report on the bacterial growth that has taken place in the petri dish.

Describe the following aspects in detail, and use your devices to add to the descriptions.
Study the petri dish in detail, and DO NOT TOUCH THE BACTERIA!!!!

1. Use the image below to help identify the bacteria

characteristics:
2. Write a detailed report on the following
 Form - What is the basic shape of the colony? For example, circular, filamentous,
etc.
 Size – The diameter of the colony. Tiny colonies are referred to as punctiform.
 Elevation - This describes the side view of a colony. Turn the Petri dish on end.
 Margin/border – The edge of a colony. What is the magnified shape of the edge of
the colony?
 Surface - How does the surface of the colony appear? For example, smooth,
glistening, rough, wrinkled or dull.
 Opacity - For example, transparent (clear), opaque, translucent (like looking through
frosted glass), etc.
 Colour - (pigmentation) - For example, white, buff, red, purple, etc.

3. Make a detailed drawing of the bacterial growth on a page and

add it to your report

4. Explain how the experiment was conducted and how each step is
taken for this experiment,
 What supplies and equipment were used in the experiment
 The steps taken to complete the experiment
 The results of the experiment
 What you observed through this experiment
 What did you learn about bacterial growth
 Add pictures to your report.
