The difficulty in connecting Mathematics to real life problems has been attributed to the
traditional teaching methods adopted for instruction and this is seen to be contributing to the
failing and bad performance of students. (Rakes, Valentine & Raonau, 2010)
2. Teaching calculus using the traditional approach fails to help students understand the basic
concepts of calculus. Axtell (2006)
3. The calculus curriculum should be improved by focusing on the conceptual understanding of
calculus in particular, balanced with the use of graphical, numerical, algebraic and verbal
representation in the teaching and learning of calculus. (Muzangwa & Chifamba, 2012)

As stated by Rakes, Valentine and Raonau (2010) the traditional way of teaching Mathematics in the
institution of education has been credited that connecting mathematics to real life problems can be
difficult that causes for the students in having terrible performance and deficiency in that particular
subject.Futhermore, Calculus is one of the branches in mathematics that deals with the continuosly
changing of variables. Moreover, teaching calculus using the traditional approach does not give enough
information for the learners to understand the basic concept in calculus (Axtell 2006). Struggles with
mathematics courses at the junior and high school level often lead to an overall weak background in
calculus and may contribute to performance difficulties among senior high and college freshman
students. As suggeted by Muzangwa and Chifamba (2012) the teaching method of calculus must be
improved by focusing on the understanding of basic concept of this particular subject, instructors should
balanced the ideas they are giving to the learners by using verbal representation, graphical and
numerical, they must also give detailed information that are easy to understand.
